Does the evidence really prove what the author is claiming, or does it prove something slightly different—maybe a bigger claim, a claim about a different group, or something from a different time period? In this lesson, you'll learn to spot the difference between sound reasoning that holds up and weak reasoning that only looks convincing at first glance.

What Makes Reasoning Sound

Sound reasoning means the evidence actually supports the claim being made. The author presents a reason or evidence, and that reason logically leads to the conclusion. For example, if an author claims "Students who attend after-school tutoring improve their math grades," and then provides data showing students in a tutoring program had higher math grades after six months, that's sound reasoning—the evidence directly proves the claim.

Weak reasoning happens when the connection breaks down. The reason or evidence doesn't actually prove what is claimed. Sometimes the evidence proves something almost right but not quite. For instance, if the author uses evidence about one group of students but applies the conclusion to all students, or uses old data to make claims about current situations, the link is broken. Your job is to catch these gaps before accepting what the author is saying.

Common Gaps in Reasoning

Several types of gaps appear regularly in arguments. One of the most common is overgeneralization, where evidence about one specific group gets applied too broadly. An author might show that a new study method works well for high school students, then claim it will work for elementary students too—but that's a leap the evidence doesn't support.

Another gap is scope shifting. The evidence might apply to a small situation, but the claim is much bigger. A restaurant's sales increased after redecorating one location, but that doesn't prove redecorating all locations will increase profits everywhere.

A third type is time mismatch. Evidence from five years ago might not support claims about today, because circumstances change. Students also need to watch for evidence that proves a related claim but not the actual claim. For example, showing that a new policy is popular doesn't prove it's effective—popularity and effectiveness are different things.

These details sound impressive, but they don't actually prove the book teaches important lessons.

Ask yourself: Does this evidence prove the author's actual claim, or does it prove something else—something nearby but different? When you spot this gap, you've found where the argument weakens and the author is trying to distract you from noticing.

How to Test an Argument's Reasoning

Read the argument below and evaluate whether the reasoning is sound.

Reason and evidence: Students at Lincoln High School eat lunch for 35 minutes instead of 25 minutes. After the change, 87 percent of students reported feeling less rushed, and the cafeteria reported fewer complaints about food quality. Therefore, extending lunch is good for student well-being.
Let's work through this step by step.

Step 1: Identify the claim. The author is saying the school should extend lunch periods by ten minutes.

Step 2: Find the main evidence. The author shows that Lincoln High students who had 35 minutes instead of 25 reported feeling less rushed, and complaints went down.

Step 3: Does the evidence directly support the claim? The evidence comes from Lincoln High School. Our school is a different school. Just because it worked there doesn't guarantee it will work here. That's an overgeneralization.

Step 4: Check the scope and time frame. When did this happen at Lincoln? Was it recent? The argument doesn't say. If it was years ago, things may have changed.

Step 5: Look for what the evidence actually proves. The evidence shows students felt less rushed and made fewer complaints. But does feeling less rushed prove it's actually good for well-being? Feeling less rushed suggests it might be good, but complaints about food could have dropped for other reasons—maybe the cafeteria hired new staff or changed vendors.

Step 6: Conclusion. The reasoning has gaps. The evidence is from a different school (scope problem), the time frame is unclear, and the evidence proves that students felt less rushed, not that lunch extensions are definitively good. The author would need evidence from our specific school, or a clearer explanation of why feeling less rushed means better well-being, to make the reasoning sound.

What's the gap in this reasoning? Explain why the evidence doesn't fully support the claim.

The high recommendation rate might be due to product quality, customer service, price, or other factors—not express shipping specifically. A customer might love the retailer but choose standard shipping anyway because the cost isn't worth it. The author is confusing 'customers like our service' with 'customers think this specific premium option justifies its price,' which are different claims.

This question requires students to spot how the evidence proves something related but not the actual claim. The author wants readers to believe express shipping is worth extra money, but the evidence only shows that customers like the company and like receiving orders quickly. It doesn't isolate whether the shipping speed specifically justifies the cost, or whether customers would feel that way knowing about the price premium. Students often miss this because the evidence feels relevant—it's about shipping and satisfaction—but it doesn't close the logical gap between 'fast delivery is nice' and 'fast delivery at this extra price is worth it.'

How do I know if evidence proves the claim or just proves something nearby?
Ask yourself: What exactly is the author claiming? Now ask: Does this evidence directly prove that specific claim, or does it prove something else? For example, if the claim is 'this book is easy to read' and the evidence is 'many people have bought this book,' that's something nearby—popularity isn't the same as readability. Write down the claim in one sentence and the evidence in another. If they don't match exactly, you've found a gap.
Is all distraction in an argument intentional?
Not necessarily. Some authors include distracting evidence because they haven't thought carefully about what actually supports their claim. Others might include it deliberately. Either way, your job is the same: notice when impressive-sounding information doesn't actually prove the main claim. You're not accusing the author of dishonesty; you're simply being a careful reader.
Can reasoning be sound even if I don't personally agree with the claim?
Absolutely. Sound reasoning means the logical connection between evidence and claim is solid, not that you agree with the claim. You might read an argument with perfect sound reasoning that reaches a conclusion you disagree with. The reasoning can be well-constructed even if the conclusion isn't something you believe. Separating 'the logic works' from 'I agree' is a crucial skill.
What if an author provides lots of evidence but some of it has gaps?
Look at the reasoning as a whole. If one piece of evidence has a gap but other evidence directly supports the claim, the argument might still be sound overall. However, if the main evidence—the reason that sits closest to the claim—has a gap, that's a serious problem. Ask yourself which evidence is most important to the argument's logic, and check that evidence most carefully.
