When you start researching a topic, you have one big question that drives your curiosity. But that main question is often too broad to answer in one paper or project. The real skill is learning to break that main question into smaller, more focused sub-questions that each explore a different angle — one might ask why something happened, another might compare two things, and another might trace how something changed over time. This lesson teaches you how to generate those related sub-questions and decide which ones actually belong in your research and which ones lead you off track.

What Are Related Research Sub-Questions?

A related research sub-question is a smaller, more focused question that grows directly from your main research question. If your main question is Why did the Panama Canal become so important to world trade?, then related sub-questions might ask: How did the canal reduce shipping time? What countries competed to build it? How did the canal change the route ships took across the ocean? Each sub-question targets a different piece of the puzzle without straying from the main topic. The key word is related — your sub-questions should always connect back to your original question, not drift into a completely different subject. When you have a set of sub-questions, they become a roadmap for your research. Instead of chasing whatever interesting facts you stumble upon, you know exactly what you're looking for and why it matters to your central inquiry.

Four Common Angles for Sub-Questions

Most sub-questions fall into a few predictable patterns. Cause questions ask why something happened or what brought it about — Why did the Industrial Revolution start in Britain? Effect questions ask what happened as a result — How did the Industrial Revolution change family life? Change-over-time questions ask how something evolved — How did factory working conditions change from 1780 to 1850? You can use these angles as a checklist. Look at your main question and ask yourself: What caused this? What are the effects? How does this compare to something else? How did this change? Not every angle will fit every topic, but running through the four usually generates at least two or three solid sub-questions. These angles also help you stay focused because they're rooted in the same subject as your main question.

Generating Your Own Sub-Questions

Start by writing your main research question at the top of a page. Then brainstorm freely — write down any question that feels related, without judging it yet. Ask yourself: What do I need to know in order to answer this? What background facts matter? What caused the situation? What changed? What are the consequences? You might write down six or eight candidates, some better than others. Don't worry about quality yet; just get them out of your head. Once you have a list, read each one and ask: Does this sub-question help me answer my main question, or does it pull me away from it? Sorting Questions That Belong from Those That Wander

Once you have a list of candidate sub-questions, separate them into two piles: On Track and Wandered Off. A question belongs on track if answering it will directly help you understand or explain your main question. It should feel like a piece of the puzzle, not a separate puzzle. If your main question is What role did women play in the American Civil War?, then a sub-question like How did women organize nursing and supply efforts? belongs on track because it answers the main question. But a sub-question like What inventions did Florence Nightingale create? wanders off because it's about one person's inventions, not about women's roles in the Civil War. Ask yourself: If I answered this sub-question thoroughly, would my reader understand my main topic better? If yes, keep it. If no, or if you're unsure, set it aside. You can always come back to a question later if your research changes direction, but at the start, focus beats breadth. A tight set of three to five related sub-questions will guide you far better than ten questions that spread you thin.

Common Pitfalls: Staying Focused

One common mistake is generating sub-questions that are too broad — they're really just rewording your main question instead of narrowing it. If your main question is How has technology changed education?, then a sub-question like How has technology affected schools? doesn't narrow anything; it's almost the same question. A better sub-question narrows the angle: How has online learning changed student engagement? or How do interactive tools affect math instruction? These ask about specific aspects rather than technology and education in general. Another mistake is wandering into interesting but unrelated territory. You might discover a fascinating detail about your topic and want to chase it, but if it doesn't help you answer your main question, it becomes a distraction. A third pitfall is having too many sub-questions. More is not better — five focused questions that work together will serve you far better than ten scattered questions that pull you in different directions. Aim for quality and focus over quantity.

Start by thinking about what you need to know to answer the main question. Let's use the four angles as a guide.

Cause angle: Why did someone invent the printing press? This is related because knowing what problem Gutenberg was trying to solve helps you understand why the invention mattered.

Effect angle: What happened after the printing press was invented? You might ask: How did the printing press increase the spread of books and ideas? or How did the printing press change literacy rates? Both of these help you see the impact on European society.

Comparison angle: How did communication before and after the printing press differ? You could ask: How did hand-copied manuscripts compare to printed books in speed and cost? This shows what changed.

Change-over-time angle: How did printing technology or its impact evolve? You might ask: How did printing technology improve from the 1400s to the 1500s? or How did readers' access to books change over the same period?

Now sort them. Ask for each: Does answering this help me understand how the printing press changed society?

Your final sub-questions are the three on-track ones. They fit together and point back to your main question.

Your main research question is: What caused the decline of the Roman Empire? Which of the following would be an appropriate related sub-question?

You are researching: How did the invention of the cotton gin transform the American South? Generate two related sub-questions using different angles (such as cause, effect, comparison, or change-over-time). For each, explain which angle you chose and why it helps answer the main question.

Answer: Answers will vary, but a strong response includes two sub-questions from different angles that directly support understanding the main topic. For example: (1) How did the cotton gin increase cotton production and demand for enslaved labor? — This is an effect question that shows the immediate consequences of the invention. (2) How did cotton farming in the South change from the 1790s to 1820s after the cotton gin was introduced? — This is a change-over-time question that traces how the invention transformed the region. Both connect directly back to the main question and together paint a fuller picture.

A strong answer shows that you understand how different angles of questioning dig into different aspects of the same topic. Effect questions explore what the invention caused; change-over-time questions show how conditions transformed. Notice that both sub-questions stay focused on the cotton gin and the South, not on unrelated topics like who invented it or how it worked mechanically. This focus is what makes your research coherent and your main question answerable.

How do I know if my sub-question is too broad or too narrow?
A sub-question is too broad if it's almost the same as your main question — it doesn't narrow anything. For example, if your main question is How has social media changed society?, then How has social media affected communication? is too broad. A better one is How has social media changed how teens resolve conflicts with friends? That's narrow and specific. A sub-question is too narrow if answering it only teaches you a tiny detail that doesn't help you understand the big picture. Can I change my sub-questions as I research?
Yes, absolutely. Your sub-questions are a guide, not a prison. As you start researching, you might discover that one of your sub-questions is harder to answer than you thought, or that another angle becomes more important. You can swap out a question, combine two into one, or add a new one if your research reveals a gap you didn't expect. However, you should not change them just because a question feels hard. The point of sub-questions is to keep you focused and on track, so change them only if your main question itself has shifted or if you've learned something that makes a new angle more important than the one you originally planned.
What if I can only come up with sub-questions about one angle, like only effect questions?
That's a sign that you might need to think more broadly about your main question. Go back and ask yourself: What caused this situation? What changed over time? How does this compare to something else? If your main question is about a person (like How did Marie Curie contribute to science?), then cause questions might not fit, but comparison questions (How was her work different from other scientists'?) and change-over-time questions (How did her research evolve?) would. If you're still stuck, talk to your teacher or brainstorm with a classmate. Sometimes hearing someone else's ideas helps you see an angle you missed.
How many sub-questions should I have?
Usually three to five is ideal. Fewer than three and you might miss important angles of your topic. More than five and you risk spreading yourself too thin and losing focus. The exact number depends on your main question and how much time you have for research, but start with three solid sub-questions that cover different angles. You can always add one more if your research reveals it's necessary, but remember: quality matters more than quantity.
