When an author connects two ideas, they're saying: "Notice that these things go together." When they distinguish between them, they're saying: "Pay attention to how these differ." That deeper understanding is the payoff of connection and distinction.
Three Main Structures: Comparison, Analogy, and Category
Comparison places two things side by side and shows how they are alike or different. Example: "Both Marie Curie and Albert Einstein won Nobel Prizes, but Curie's work centered on radioactivity while Einstein's focused on relativity." You see the parallel (both won the prize) and the contrast (different fields).
Analogy explains something unfamiliar by comparing it to something familiar. It says: "This new thing works like that familiar thing." Example: "A cell's mitochondria function like a power plant—they take in raw fuel and convert it into usable energy." The analogy makes the cell's process clearer by linking it to an everyday system.
Category groups two or more things under a larger heading. Example: "Both the printing press and the internet are information technologies that transformed how knowledge spreads." Step 3: Describe the connection precisely. Don't oversimplify. Notice both what's alike and what differs. For an analogy, identify which features match and which don't. For a category, note what the items have in common that justifies the grouping.
Step 4: Explain the insight. Ask yourself: "What does this connection teach me that I wouldn't have understood from each fact alone?" Write this down. It's the most important part.
