Every usable map carries the same working parts — a title, a legend, a scale, a compass rose and a grid. Each one answers a specific question, and together they turn a picture into a tool you can measure and trust. In this lesson you will learn what each part does, how to use a scale bar to convert map distance into real distance, how to give directions using cardinal and intermediate points, and the rule that trips up almost everyone the first time: a large-scale map shows a small area in great detail.
The Working Parts of Every Map

The legend deserves special attention because symbols are not universal. A star inside a circle usually means a national capital, and a plain dot a smaller city, but a mapmaker can choose any symbol at all. Color has no fixed meaning either. On a physical map green often means low elevation, not forest — a green area in a desert country may be flat land below sea level with no plants on it. Always read the legend before you draw a conclusion about what a color shows. Students who skip it are the ones who report that the Sahara has grasslands.
Three Ways a Map Shows Scale
A word scale (also called a verbal scale) simply states it: "One inch equals five miles." It is the easiest to read and the hardest to misuse.
A bar scale (graphic scale) is a small ruler printed on the map, divided into labeled segments. Its great advantage is that it stays correct when the map is photocopied larger or smaller, because the bar shrinks or grows along with everything else.
A ratio scale, or representative fraction, is written as or . It means one unit of any kind on the map equals 24,000 of those same units on the ground — one centimeter to 24,000 centimeters, one inch to 24,000 inches. Because it has no units attached, a ratio scale works for anyone anywhere.
To measure a real distance, mark the map distance between two points on the straight edge of a paper strip, lay that strip along the bar scale, and read off the ground distance. If the distance is longer than the bar, measure the bar's worth, mark it, and step it along again, adding as you go.
Where students go wrong: converting with a ratio scale and forgetting that both sides use the same unit. In , one centimeter on the map is 100,000 centimeters on the ground — which is 1,000 meters, or 1 kilometer, not 100,000 meters. A second common error is measuring a curving road with a straight ruler. Roads and rivers bend, so a straight-line measurement always gives a distance shorter than the real trip.
Large Scale Versus Small Scale
The wording makes sense once you treat the scale as an actual fraction. Compare and . Which fraction is larger? One ten-thousandth is much bigger than one millionth, so is the large-scale map. On it, one centimeter covers only 100 meters of ground, so a single city block can fill a good part of the page — you can show individual buildings, footpaths and street names. On the map, one centimeter covers 10 kilometers, so an entire country fits on the page but individual streets vanish.

A common wrong answer is to call a world map "large scale" because the area is large. Remember: the words large and small describe the fraction, not the territory.
Direction, the Compass Rose and Grids
Most maps place north at the top, but this is a convention, not a law. Always check the compass rose before assuming. If the arrow points to the upper right, then moving toward the top of the page is heading northwest, not north.
There is also a difference between true north, the direction toward the geographic North Pole, and magnetic north, the direction a compass needle actually points, which is toward a magnetic zone that shifts slowly over the years. Detailed maps used by hikers show both, with the angle between them labeled. For classroom work, use true north unless a map says otherwise.
A grid lets you name a location precisely. On many road maps and atlases it is an alphanumeric grid: columns lettered A, B, C across the top and rows numbered 1, 2, 3 down the side, so an index can send you to square C-4. On other maps the grid lines are lines of latitude and longitude, which you will use for absolute location.
When you describe a route, combine the tools: read direction from the compass rose, distance from the scale, and features from the legend. "Travel southeast about 12 kilometers along the highway to the airport symbol in square D-3" is a complete direction. "Go that way for a while" is not.

Worked example
Part (b): North is up on this map, so the top of the page is north, the right side is east, and the bottom is south. A place toward the lower right is toward the south and toward the east at the same time, which is the intermediate direction southeast.
Part (c): Convert the word scale into a representative fraction. Twenty-five kilometers equals 25,000 meters, and 25,000 meters equals 2,500,000 centimeters. So one centimeter on the map stands for 2,500,000 centimeters on the ground, giving . That fraction is tiny, and a single page covers a region hundreds of kilometers across, so this is a small-scale map. It is fine for planning which region to visit, but you would want a much larger-scale map — perhaps — to follow individual trails once you arrive.

A student measures 3.5 centimeters between two towns on a map whose scale is . The student reports the distance as 1,400,000 meters. Explain the error and give the correct distance in kilometers.
Answer: The student kept the wrong unit. Multiplying gives 1,400,000 centimeters, not meters. That equals 14,000 meters, or 14 kilometers.
A map of a national park shows a green area, a blue line, and a small triangle. Why can you not describe what these features are without looking at another part of the map, and which part do you need?
Answer: Map symbols and colors are chosen by the mapmaker and have no fixed universal meaning, so you must read the legend (key) to learn what each one represents.
FAQ
- Why is a large-scale map the one that shows a small area?
- Because large and small describe the scale fraction, not the land. A scale of is the fraction one ten-thousandth, which is much bigger than , or one ten-millionth. The bigger fraction means map features are drawn closer to their real size, so only a small area fits on the page — but you can see a great deal of detail in it.
- Which type of scale is best to use?
- A bar scale is usually safest, because it is printed on the map and shrinks or stretches along with the map if the page is copied at a different size. A ratio scale like becomes wrong the moment a map is resized, and a word scale has the same problem. For quick mental math, though, a word scale such as one inch equals five miles is the easiest to work with.
- Does north always point to the top of a map?
- No. Placing north at the top is a widely used convention, not a rule. Subway maps, floor plans, historical maps and some regional maps are turned to fit the page or the traveler's viewpoint. That is exactly why the compass rose exists — check it before you describe any direction.
- What is the difference between a legend and a grid?
- A legend tells you what the symbols mean, so it answers what is there. A grid tells you where things are, using lettered and numbered squares or lines of latitude and longitude, so it answers where it is. Most usable maps carry both, along with a title, a scale and a compass rose.
