What this lesson covers
Those two facts — a broken-up western edge and a huge continental interior — explain most of the region's physical geography and almost all of its climate. In this lesson you will name the major peninsulas, plains, mountain ranges and rivers of Europe and Russia, and then use three ideas (nearness to the sea, a warm ocean current, and distance inland) to explain why two cities at the very same latitude can have winters that feel like different planets.

All that indentation matters. A jagged coastline gives a region far more shoreline than a smooth one of the same size, which means more natural harbors, more fishing grounds, and more places where ships can shelter. That is a big reason so many European countries became trading and seafaring nations.
Russia has an enormous coastline too, but most of it faces the Arctic Ocean and stays frozen much of the year, so it has never been as useful for trade. Russia's warm-water access is limited — which is why the Black Sea coast and the Baltic port of St. Petersburg matter so much to the country. A common mistake is assuming "lots of coastline" automatically means "lots of ports." Location and temperature decide that, not length alone.
Plains, Mountains, and the Line Between Two Continents
Southern Europe is the opposite. A belt of young, rugged mountains runs east–west: the Pyrenees between Spain and France, the Alps arcing through France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria, the Apennines down the spine of Italy, the Carpathians curving through central Europe, and the Balkan ranges. These mountains block movement, block winds, and separate cultures on either side.
The Ural Mountains run north–south through Russia and form the traditional dividing line between Europe and Asia. Do not picture the Rockies — the Urals are old and worn down, rarely much above 1,900 meters, and people cross them easily. They are a boundary by tradition and by mineral wealth, not because they are hard to climb.
East of the Urals lies Siberia: the flat West Siberian Plain, then the Central Siberian Plateau, then mountains near the Pacific. Two other features worth knowing are the Scandinavian Peninsula's glacier-scoured highlands and the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas, home to Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe.

The Volga is Europe's longest river and the heart of Russian shipping, but notice where it ends: the Caspian Sea, which is landlocked. A river that does not reach an ocean cannot carry cargo straight out to world markets, so canals were built to link the Volga to the Black and Baltic Seas.
Siberia's giant rivers have a different problem. They flow north, so their southern headwaters thaw first while the mouths are still frozen solid. The meltwater has nowhere to go and spreads out into huge seasonal floods and swamps. Direction of flow, not just length, shapes how useful a river is.
Three Reasons the Climate Changes as You Move East
First, nearness to the sea. Water heats and cools much more slowly than land. Places on the coast get air that has crossed the ocean, so their winters are milder and summers cooler — a small temperature range. This is the marine west coast climate of Ireland, Britain, the Netherlands and coastal France: cloudy, damp, rarely extreme.
Second, the North Atlantic Drift, a warm ocean current that is the extension of the Gulf Stream. It carries warm water from near the tropics northeast across the Atlantic to Europe's western shores. Westerly winds blow over that warm water and deliver mild, moist air onto land. This is why Norway's coast has ports that stay ice-free above the Arctic Circle, while places at the same latitude in Canada are frozen.
Third, distance inland, sometimes called continentality. The farther east you go, the less the ocean's influence reaches. Winters get colder, summers get hotter, and the yearly temperature range grows. Eastern Poland and Ukraine have a humid continental climate; central Siberia has a subarctic climate with brutal winters; the Arctic fringe is tundra.
Southern Europe is the exception to the pattern: the Mediterranean climate has hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, partly because mountains shelter it and the shifting wind belts push storms away in summer.
Where students go wrong: saying Europe is warm "because it is close to the equator." It is not — most of Europe lies north of the continental United States. The current and the ocean do the work.

Step 2: Check nearness to the sea. Bergen is right on the Atlantic. Water changes temperature slowly, so ocean air moderates the coast: winters stay mild and summers stay cool. Krasnoyarsk is thousands of kilometers from any ocean that can affect it, so the land there heats and cools freely with the seasons.
Step 3: Check ocean currents. The North Atlantic Drift, the warm continuation of the Gulf Stream, flows northeast right past Norway. Prevailing westerly winds blow across that warm water and carry mild, moist air onshore. That is why Norwegian ports stay ice-free far north.
Step 4: Check distance inland (continentality). Krasnoyarsk is a textbook continental interior. With no marine influence, its yearly temperature range is huge — bitter winters and surprisingly warm summers — giving it a subarctic climate.
Step 5: Write the conclusion in one sentence. Bergen is warmer than a city farther south because coastal location plus the North Atlantic Drift keep it mild, while Krasnoyarsk's distance from any moderating ocean produces extreme continental cold. A complete answer names all three factors and states clearly that latitude does not explain this pair.

- Where exactly is the border between Europe and Russia, or between Europe and Asia?
- There is no natural wall, so geographers use an agreed line: the Ural Mountains, then the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and the Caucasus Mountains. Russia sits on both sides of it, which is why Russia is called a transcontinental country. About three quarters of Russia's land is in Asia, but roughly three quarters of its people live in the European part, west of the Urals.
- Is the North Atlantic Drift the same thing as the Gulf Stream?
- They are connected but not identical. The Gulf Stream is the warm current that flows north along the eastern United States. As it crosses the Atlantic and swings northeast toward Europe it is called the North Atlantic Drift. It is that northeastern extension, combined with prevailing westerly winds blowing over it, that keeps Ireland, Britain and coastal Norway mild in winter.
