Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth, home to 54 countries and almost every environment you can name — steaming rainforest, the world's largest hot desert, snow-capped volcanoes on the equator, and grasslands that stretch past the horizon. That variety is not random. Three big facts about Africa's position and shape explain most of it: the Equator cuts through the middle of the continent, the interior sits high on a giant raised plateau, and the coastline is unusually smooth.

In this lesson you will learn to read Africa's climate bands like stripes on a map, locate its major deserts, grasslands, rivers, and landforms, and explain the cause-and-effect links between position and place. Once you see the pattern, a blank map of Africa stops being a memorization job and starts making sense.

A Plateau Continent Centered on the Equator

Africa spans about 5,000 miles from north to south, and the Equator (00^\circ latitude) runs almost through its middle, near Lake Victoria and the Congo Basin. The Prime Meridian crosses West Africa, so Africa has land in all four hemispheres. Its far northern edge (near 3737^\circN) and its far southern tip (near 3535^\circS) sit at similar distances from the Equator — which is why Tunisia and the Cape Town area have surprisingly similar mild, rainy-winter climates.

Africa is often called a plateau continent. Most of the interior is a broad, raised tableland between roughly 1,000 and 5,000 feet above sea level, with southern and eastern Africa standing highest. Instead of long mountain ranges running through the middle, the plateau ends at escarpments — steep slopes that drop toward a narrow coastal plain.

The coastline itself is remarkably smooth. Africa is about three times the size of Europe, yet it has a shorter coastline, because it lacks Europe's deep bays, inlets, and peninsulas. Few natural harbors formed, and rivers tumble over falls and rapids at the escarpment instead of flowing gently to the sea. For centuries this meant ships could reach the coast but not sail into the interior, and it is one reason many large African cities grew inland rather than at ports. A common mistake is to say Africa has a "small" coastline because the continent is small — it is the shape, not the size, that matters.

Climate Bands That Mirror Each Other

Because the Equator crosses the middle of Africa, climate zones form bands that repeat in reverse order north and south of it. Warm, moist air rises at the Equator and dumps heavy rain; that same air sinks around 3030^\circ north and south, creating dry, cloudless desert conditions. Move away from the Equator and you cross the same sequence twice.

Elevation bends this pattern. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania rises 19,341 feet just three degrees from the Equator and holds ice at its summit, because temperature drops as altitude increases. Nairobi and Addis Ababa are near the Equator yet feel spring-like year-round for the same reason.

Where students go wrong: they assume every equatorial place is a rainforest. Eastern Africa sits on the high plateau in the rain shadow of highlands, so Kenya and Somalia are savanna and semi-desert even though they straddle the Equator.

Deserts, the Sahel, and Savanna Grasslands

The Sahara stretches across all of northern Africa — roughly 3.5 million square miles, about the size of the United States, making it the largest hot desert on Earth. It is mostly rocky plains and gravel, not endless dunes, and includes mountains and dry riverbeds. In the south, the Kalahari is a sandy semi-desert basin, and the Namib hugs the Atlantic coast, kept extremely dry by a cold ocean current but frequently fogged in.

Between the Sahara and the wetter south lies the Sahel, a semiarid belt of short grass and thorny shrubs that acts as a transition zone. Rainfall there is unreliable, and during long droughts, combined with overgrazing, farming, and tree cutting, usable land can turn into desert — a process called desertification.

South of the Sahel, and again south of the rainforest, spread Africa's savannas: tropical grasslands dotted with scattered trees such as acacia and baobab. Savannas cover about two-fifths of the continent, more than any other environment. They have a distinct wet season and dry season, and the dry season, not cold, is what shapes plant and animal life. The Serengeti Plain of Tanzania and Kenya supports vast herds of grazing animals that migrate to follow the rains.

A frequent mix-up: the Sahara is a desert, while the Sahel is a semiarid grassland at its southern edge. They are neighbors, not the same place, and the difference is measured in rainfall.

Rivers, Lakes, and the Great Rift Valley

Four rivers dominate Africa's map. The Nile, at about 4,132 miles, is the world's longest river and one of the few major rivers that flows north. Its White Nile branch begins near Lake Victoria; its Blue Nile branch pours out of the Ethiopian Highlands carrying the silt that once flooded Egypt's farmland each year, and the two join at Khartoum before the river reaches its Mediterranean delta.

The Congo is second in length but first in volume, draining the enormous rainforest basin of central Africa and crossing the Equator twice — so part of its watershed is always in a rainy season, keeping its flow steady year-round. The Niger loops in a boomerang shape through West Africa and spreads into an inland delta in Mali before turning south to the Gulf of Guinea. The Zambezi plunges over Victoria Falls on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border.

Every one of these rivers hits cataracts — rapids and waterfalls — where it drops off the plateau, which is why none of them offer an unbroken route from the ocean to the interior.

Eastern Africa is being pulled apart along the Great Rift Valley, a system of trenches running roughly 4,000 miles from the Red Sea south into Mozambique. Its steep walls hold long, deep lakes such as Tanganyika and Malawi, and volcanic activity along it built Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Lake Victoria, by contrast, sits in a shallow basin between two rift branches and is Africa's largest lake by area. Other landforms to know: the Atlas Mountains in the northwest, the Ethiopian Highlands, and the Drakensberg escarpment in the southeast.

A sheltered coastal inlet deep enough for ships to anchor safely. Africa's smooth coastline produced very few of them.

Worked example

A geography class is planning an imaginary road trip straight south along about 2020^\circE longitude, starting on the Mediterranean coast of Libya and ending in the Congo Basin. List the climate and vegetation bands the class would cross, in order, and explain why the same bands would appear again if the trip continued to South Africa.
Step 1: Start at the coast. Northern Libya touches the Mediterranean climate zone — mild, rainy winters and hot dry summers — though the strip is narrow here.

Step 2: Head south and the rain disappears fast. Around 3030^\circN sinking dry air creates the Sahara, the largest hot desert on Earth. This band lasts for well over a thousand miles of the drive.

Step 3: Near 1515^\circN the Sahara fades into the Sahel — semiarid steppe with short grass and thorn bushes, a few inches of unreliable summer rain.

Step 4: Continue south into tropical savanna: tall grasses, scattered acacia trees, a clear wet season and dry season.

Step 5: Approaching the Equator, rainfall climbs above 60 inches a year and the trip ends in the tropical rainforest of the Congo Basin.

Step 6: Why the bands repeat. The Equator is the wettest line and the two subtropical zones near 3030^\circN and 3030^\circS are the driest. Since climate depends mainly on distance from the Equator, driving onward from the Congo Basin reverses the list: savanna, then the semiarid Kalahari margin, then desert, then a Mediterranean climate at the far southwestern tip. The bands mirror each other across the Equator.
