What this lesson covers

Every argument you read — an editorial about phone bans, a letter urging the town to build a skate park, a science article about sleep — is built like a structure. There is one thing the writer wants you to believe, some supports holding that idea up, and specific facts packed under each support. Tracing an argument means taking that structure apart on purpose so you can see exactly what is holding what.

But naming the parts is only half the job. The harder, more interesting half is judging them. A writer can hand you a fact that is completely true and still useless, because it does not connect to the point being made. A writer can hand you one dramatic story and act as though it proves something about millions of people. In this lesson you will learn to spot both moves — evidence that is true but off the point, and evidence that is too small to carry the claim — and to say clearly, in your own words, why the argument does or does not hold.

Claim, Reason, Evidence: The Three Levels

An argument has three levels, and confusing them is the single most common mistake students make.

The claim is the writer's overall position — the one sentence the whole text is trying to get you to accept. A claim is arguable, which means a reasonable person could disagree with it. "Middle schoolers should start school at 8:45" is a claim. "School starts at 7:40" is not; it is just a fact.

A reason answers the question "Why should I believe that claim?" Reasons are the beams holding the claim up. Most arguments have two to four of them. You can usually test a reason by putting the word "because" in front of it: schools should start later because teenagers biologically fall asleep later, because tired students crash more cars, because later starts improve grades.

Evidence is the specific material packed under each reason: statistics, research findings, expert statements, examples, and firsthand accounts. Evidence is not arguable — it is checkable.

Where students go wrong: they label a reason as the claim. If a sentence explains or supports another sentence in the text, it is a reason, not the claim. The claim is the sentence everything else is working for.

How to Trace: Reading With a Map

Tracing is an active reading process, not something you do by staring at the page. Work in this order.

First, read the whole text once for the gist. Then find the claim. It is often in the first paragraph or the last, and it frequently reappears in the conclusion in slightly different words. If you cannot find one sentence, write the claim yourself in the form "The author wants readers to believe that ___."

Second, hunt for reasons. Reasons usually get their own paragraph, and writers flag them with signal words.

Third, attach each piece of evidence to the reason it is supposed to serve. Draw actual lines or make a two-column chart. This step is where the argument's weaknesses become visible, because you will find evidence that attaches to nothing, and reasons with nothing underneath them.

Watch out for the counterclaim. When a writer says "Some parents worry about bus schedules," that is not the writer's own reason — it is an objection the writer plans to answer. Students who log counterclaims as reasons end up describing an argument the author never made.

Relevance: True but Off the Point

Once your map is built, judge each piece of evidence against the reason it sits under. The first test is relevance: does this fact actually make that reason more believable?

Here is the trap. Evidence can be perfectly, verifiably true and still be irrelevant. Suppose the reason is "Later start times improve student health," and the evidence offered is "Our school cafeteria serves fresh fruit every day." That statement may be entirely accurate. It is also about food, not sleep. It does nothing to strengthen the reason, so it is true but off the point.

A second version of the problem is evidence that supports a real point — just not the one it is attached to. A writer arguing for later start times might cite a study showing that students who eat breakfast score higher on tests. Interesting, checkable, and about students. But it supports a claim about breakfast programs, not about the clock.

To test relevance, say this out loud: "If this evidence is true, does it make the reason more likely to be true?" If the honest answer is "not really," you have found irrelevant evidence, and you should say so specifically — not "this evidence is bad," but "this evidence is about cafeteria food, while the reason is about sleep, so it does not support the reason."

One more relevance issue worth knowing: evidence about a different group. A statistic about college students' sleep habits does not automatically apply to seventh graders. It may be suggestive, but a careful reader flags the mismatch instead of accepting it silently.

Sufficiency: Too Small to Carry the Claim

The second test is sufficiency: even if every piece of evidence is relevant, is there enough of it to hold up a claim that big?

The classic failure is a single story doing the work of research. "My cousin switched to a later schedule and her grades went up, so all schools should switch" rests an argument about thousands of students on one person. That one story is relevant — it really is about start times and grades — but it is far too small. One case cannot rule out coincidence, and it cannot tell you what would happen anywhere else.

Sufficiency problems come in a few recognizable shapes. A sample can be too small (three students interviewed). A sample can be unrepresentative (only students already on the honor roll). Evidence can be outdated, so it no longer describes current conditions. Or one reason can be fully loaded with data while another reason sits completely bare, which leaves a beam with nothing under it.

The scope of the claim controls how much evidence is enough. A modest claim — "Our school should try a later start for one semester" — needs less support than a sweeping one — "Every middle school in the country should start at 8:45." The bigger the claim, the heavier the load, and the more varied and numerous the evidence has to be.

When you write your evaluation, name what is missing, not just that something is missing. "The author supports the safety reason with one anecdote about a single driver; data on crash rates in districts that changed their start times would be needed to support a district-wide claim" tells a reader exactly where the structure is thin.

Explaining Your Evaluation in Writing

Teachers ask you to trace an argument in writing, usually in a paragraph or two, and there is a reliable shape for that response.

Start by naming the claim in your own words. Then walk through the reasons in the order the author presents them, and for each one, state the evidence and deliver a verdict on it. Close with an overall judgment: is the argument convincing, partly convincing, or unsupported?

Useful sentence frames, which you should adapt rather than copy word for word: "The author claims that ___." "The first reason given is ___, supported by ___." "This evidence is relevant because it directly addresses ___." "Although this statement is true, it concerns ___ rather than ___, so it does not support the reason." "One example is not sufficient to support a claim about ___."

Two habits separate a strong response from a weak one. First, quote or paraphrase the actual evidence instead of gesturing at it. "The author uses statistics" says almost nothing; "The author cites a study of 9,000 students in eight high schools" shows you read carefully. Second, judge relevance and sufficiency separately. They are different problems with different fixes, and running them together produces vague comments like "the evidence is weak."

Finally, remember that finding a flaw does not mean the claim is false. An argument can be poorly supported and still land on a true conclusion. Your job as a reader is to evaluate the support the writer actually provided, not to decide who is right about the world.

Unrepresentative sample.
A group of examples that does not reflect the larger population being discussed, which makes conclusions drawn from it unreliable.

Worked example

Trace and evaluate the argument in this passage.

"Riverton Middle School should replace its paved courtyard with a school garden. First, gardening teaches science students cannot learn from a textbook. When our seventh graders grew bean plants indoors last spring, ninety percent of them correctly explained photosynthesis on the unit test, up from sixty-one percent the year before. Second, a garden would improve student nutrition. My neighbor Kevin grew tomatoes at home and says he eats more vegetables now than he used to. Third, gardens are beautiful. The courtyard's concrete was poured in 1974 and is badly cracked. Critics say a garden is expensive, but a local nursery has offered to donate seedlings."
Step 1: Find the claim. The first sentence states it: Riverton Middle School should replace its paved courtyard with a school garden. It is arguable — a reader could disagree — and everything else in the passage works to support it.

Step 2: List the reasons. The signal words "First," "Second," and "Third" make this easy. Reason 1: gardening teaches science in a hands-on way. Reason 2: a garden would improve student nutrition. Reason 3: gardens are beautiful. Note that "Critics say a garden is expensive" is a counterclaim, not a fourth reason, and the nursery donation is the author's answer to it.

Step 3: Attach evidence to each reason. Reason 1 gets the bean-plant result: photosynthesis scores rose from sixty-one percent to ninety percent. Reason 2 gets one story about a neighbor named Kevin. Reason 3 gets the fact that the concrete was poured in 1974 and is cracked.

Step 4: Test relevance. The bean-plant evidence is relevant — it is directly about students learning science by growing plants. The Kevin evidence is relevant in topic (gardening and vegetables) but concerns an adult neighbor at home, not students at school, so the match is loose. The 1974 concrete fact is true but off the point: cracked pavement tells us the courtyard is ugly and old, not that a garden is the right replacement. A new mural or fresh paving would also fix cracked concrete.

Step 5: Test sufficiency. Reason 1 has the strongest support, though it rests on a single class in a single year. Reason 2 rests entirely on one anecdote about one person, which is far too small to support a nutrition claim about a whole school. Reason 3 has no real support at all.

Step 6: Write the verdict. The science reason is the best supported; the nutrition reason relies on a single unrepresentative anecdote; the beauty reason offers a true fact that does not connect to gardens specifically. The argument is only partly convincing, and it would be strengthened by nutrition data from schools that already have gardens.

Practice questions

A writer claims that the town should build a public pool. One reason given is "A pool would give teenagers a safe place to spend summer afternoons." Which piece of evidence is true but off the point for that reason?

The reason is about safety and supervision for teens in the afternoon. The growth of competitive swimming may be perfectly true, but it concerns the popularity of a sport, not whether a pool keeps teens safe. The other three choices all connect directly to safety, supervision, or teen behavior during summer afternoons. This is the classic true-but-irrelevant pattern: check whether the fact makes the specific reason more believable, not just whether it is about the same general topic.
An article argues that all students in the country should be required to take a personal finance class. Its only evidence is an interview with one high school senior who took such a class and now keeps a budget. Explain what is wrong with this support and describe one specific piece of evidence that would strengthen the argument.

Answer: The evidence is relevant but insufficient: one student's experience cannot support a nationwide requirement. Stronger support would be data comparing financial habits of many students across different schools and regions, some of whom took the class and some of whom did not.

Start by separating the two tests. Relevance is fine here — the interview really is about a student who took a finance class and changed a money habit, so it bears on the reason. The failure is sufficiency. The claim covers every student in the country, and one interview cannot show that the result is typical rather than a coincidence or the effect of that student's family, teacher, or personality. A complete answer names the scope mismatch between a single case and a national claim, and then says what is missing in concrete terms: a large study across varied schools with a comparison group. Answers that only say "the evidence is weak" do not show what kind of weakness it is or how to fix it.

That structure — objection, then rebuttal — marks a counterclaim. The statistic that follows is the writer's response to it. Students who log this as one of the writer's reasons end up summarizing an argument the writer never made, which is why watching for phrases like "critics argue," "some say," and "opponents claim" matters when you build your map.

FAQ

What is the difference between a reason and a piece of evidence?
A reason is a general statement that explains why the claim should be accepted, and it is arguable — someone could dispute it. Evidence is specific and checkable: a number, a study, a quotation, a documented example. If you can put "because" in front of a sentence and it explains the claim, it is a reason. If it is a fact someone could look up and verify, it is evidence. Reasons sit between the claim and the evidence, and every reason should have evidence packed underneath it.
How much evidence counts as enough?
There is no fixed number, because sufficiency depends on how big the claim is. A claim about one classroom might be supported by observations from that classroom. A claim about every school in the country needs large-scale data from many places. Ask yourself: could this evidence be true and the claim still be false? If one story or one statistic leaves that door wide open, the support is not sufficient. Variety matters too — three pieces of evidence from three different kinds of sources are stronger than three examples of the same thing.
Can evidence be true and still not support the argument?
Yes, and recognizing this is the heart of the lesson. Truth and relevance are separate questions. A fact about cafeteria food is true but says nothing about a reason concerning sleep. A statistic about college students may be accurate but describes a different age group than the claim covers. When you evaluate, never argue that irrelevant evidence is false — say precisely what it is about and what the reason is about, and show that the two do not line up.
If I find weak evidence, does that mean the writer's claim is wrong?
No. A poorly supported claim can still turn out to be true; the writer just has not shown it. Your task when tracing an argument is to evaluate the support that is actually on the page, not to settle the issue yourself. The honest conclusion in that situation is something like "the claim may be correct, but the evidence provided does not establish it," followed by a note about what kind of evidence would.
