If you've ever wondered why rainforests are always wet and hot while deserts are dry and scorching, or why tundra stays frozen year-round while grasslands burst with wildflowers in summer, you're thinking about biomes. This lesson teaches you how to recognize and describe the five major biomes using three key clues: what the temperature is like, how much rain or snow falls, and what plants grow there. By the end, you'll be able to look at a description of climate and vegetation and confidently match it to the right biome.

What Is a Biome?

A biome is a large geographic region on Earth that has a similar climate (temperature and precipitation patterns) throughout, and supports specific types of plants and animals adapted to those conditions. The word comes from bio-, meaning life, and -ome, meaning a collection or group. So a biome is a collection of life suited to one kind of climate.

Think of Earth like a patchwork quilt. Each patch (biome) has its own climate recipe: some are hot and wet, some are hot and dry, some are cold and snowy. The plants and animals living in each patch are perfectly suited to that recipe. A cactus thrives in a desert because it needs very little water and can handle extreme heat. A polar bear lives in the tundra because its thick fur keeps it warm in freezing temperatures. These organisms evolved and adapted over thousands of years to match their home biome.

Biomes are identified primarily by three factors: average temperature, annual precipitation (rain and snow), and the dominant plant life. If you know these three things about a place, you can identify its biome.

The Five Major Biomes

Earth has five major biomes that you need to know. Each has a unique climate and landscape.

Desert: Hot and very dry, with little precipitation—often less than 10 inches per year. Plants are sparse and specially adapted to store water, like cacti. Animals are active mostly at night to escape the heat. Examples include the Sahara in Africa and the Mojave in the United States.

Rainforest: Hot and very wet, with heavy precipitation—often more than 80 inches per year. Dense vegetation and tall trees create a thick canopy. The air is humid and warm year-round. Examples include the Amazon rainforest in South America and the Congo rainforest in Africa.

Tundra: Extremely cold, with low precipitation (mostly as snow). Few plants grow—mainly mosses, lichens, and short grasses. The ground is frozen permanently beneath the surface. Found in Arctic regions and on high mountains. Examples include northern Canada, Siberia, and Greenland.

Grassland: Moderate temperature, moderate precipitation—roughly 10 to 30 inches per year. Dominated by grasses and wildflowers, with few trees. Rolling plains and open spaces are typical. Examples include the Great Plains of North America, the African savanna, and the prairies of the Midwest.

Forest: Moderate to cool temperature, moderate precipitation. Dominated by trees—either deciduous trees that lose their leaves in winter (like oak and maple) or evergreen trees that keep their needles year-round (like pine and spruce). Examples include temperate forests of eastern North America and boreal forests of Canada.

How to Identify a Biome

When you read a description of a place and need to identify its biome, look for clues in three categories:

A key mistake students make is focusing on only one clue. A place can be cold, but if you don't also know the precipitation and plants, you might confuse a tundra with a cold forest. Similarly, a very wet place might be a rainforest or a forest in a rainy climate—the heat makes the difference. Always use all three clues together.

Another common confusion: confusing grasslands with deserts because both have sparse trees. The difference is precipitation. Grasslands get moderate rain, so grasses thrive. Deserts get very little rain, so plants are widely spaced and adapted to extreme dryness.

Where Biomes Are Located on Earth

Biomes are found in different parts of the world based on their climate needs. Rainforests cluster near the equator where it is consistently hot and wet. Deserts also exist near the equator and in other regions, but in areas where very little moisture reaches the ground. Tundra is found at the far north and south (the Arctic and Antarctic regions) and on very high mountains where it is always cold. Grasslands and forests are spread across the middle latitudes where temperature and precipitation vary seasonally but remain moderate overall.

This distribution is not random—it depends on how Earth's atmosphere and oceans move heat and moisture around the planet. However, the detailed explanation for why each biome is located where it is comes in a later lesson. For now, the key point is: each biome exists where its climate conditions naturally occur, and the plants and animals living there are adapted to thrive in those exact conditions.

Worked example

A region has an average temperature of 75 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, receives about 100 inches of rain per year, and is covered with very tall trees whose branches form a thick canopy that blocks much of the sunlight from reaching the ground. Identify the biome and explain your answer using all three clues.
Step 1: Identify the temperature clue. The description says the average temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. This is consistently warm and hot—it does not cool down in winter. This rules out tundra, which is freezing, and temperate forests, which have cold winters. We are left with desert, rainforest, or grassland.

Step 2: Identify the precipitation clue. The region receives about 100 inches of rain per year. This is very high precipitation. Deserts get less than 10 inches, grasslands get 10 to 30 inches, and rainforests typically get more than 80 inches. So 100 inches strongly suggests rainforest.

Step 3: Identify the plant life clue. The description mentions very tall trees with a thick canopy. This is characteristic of rainforests, where plants compete for light and grow tall and dense. Deserts have sparse, low plants. Grasslands are dominated by grasses, not tall trees.

Step 4: Combine all clues. Hot year-round + very high precipitation + tall dense trees = rainforest. The answer is rainforest. All three clues point to the same biome, which confirms the identification.

A place receives only 8 inches of rain per year, has very hot days and cold nights, and is covered mainly with low shrubs and scattered cacti. Which biome is this?

Answer: Desert

The key clues are the very low precipitation (8 inches—well below 10 inches per year) and the presence of cacti and low shrubs adapted to extreme dryness. Hot days and cold nights are also typical of deserts, where the lack of cloud cover allows heat to escape at night. Rainforest is ruled out by the low precipitation and plant type. Tundra is ruled out because it is not hot. Grassland is ruled out because grasslands receive more rainfall and are dominated by grasses, not cacti and shrubs.
Two regions are both very cold year-round. Region A is frozen solid with almost no plants except mosses, lichens, and low grasses. Region B has coniferous trees (evergreens) that form a forest. Explain why these two regions are different biomes even though they both have cold temperatures.

Answer: They are different biomes because temperature alone is not enough to define a biome. You must also consider precipitation and plant life. Region A matches the tundra biome because it has very low precipitation, permanently frozen ground, and only low plants that can survive extreme cold with minimal water. Region B matches a boreal or cold forest biome because it has enough precipitation to support tree growth and the plants are adapted to the colder climate but not the extreme conditions of tundra. Temperature tells only part of the story; the combination of temperature, precipitation, and vegetation type determines the biome.

This question tests whether students can avoid the common mistake of using just one clue to identify a biome. Both regions are cold, but they have different precipitation patterns and plant life, which puts them in different biomes. The answer shows that biome identification requires all three clues working together.
Why can a desert and a grassland both be found in the same general latitude (distance from the equator) on Earth, yet be completely different biomes?

Answer: A desert and grassland can exist at the same latitude if they receive different amounts of precipitation. This can happen because of geography—for example, mountains can block moisture from reaching one area (creating a desert on the rain shadow side) while another area nearby receives enough rainfall to support grassland vegetation. Although they are at similar distances from the equator, their local climates differ due to geographic features that affect how much rain falls. Since precipitation is one of the three key factors that defines a biome, the difference in rainfall creates two distinct biomes even at the same latitude.

This answer reinforces that biome distribution depends on actual local climate conditions, not just latitude alone. It also previews the idea (covered in later lessons) that geography affects climate in important ways. Students often assume biomes are determined solely by how far they are from the equator, but this question challenges that oversimplification.

FAQ

What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere—whether it is raining, sunny, hot, or cold right now. Climate is the long-term average of temperature and precipitation over many years in a region. A biome is defined by climate, not weather. A rainforest might have a dry day, but it has a wet climate overall. Tundra might have a rare warm day, but it has a cold climate.
Can a biome change over time?
Yes, but very slowly. If a region's climate changes over many decades or centuries due to natural causes or human activity, the plants and animals living there may change, and the biome can gradually shift. For example, if a forest region becomes much drier, trees may die off and it could gradually become grassland. However, this happens over a very long time, not year to year.
Are there only five biomes in the world?
The five major biomes taught here—desert, rainforest, tundra, grassland, and forest—are the broadest categories. Geographers sometimes divide them into more specific types (for example, tropical rainforest versus temperate rainforest, or hot desert versus cold desert), but for this course, we focus on these five major categories.
Do all deserts have sand dunes?
No. Deserts are defined by low precipitation and sparse plant life, not by sand. Some deserts, like the Sahara, have large areas of sand dunes. Other deserts, like the Great Basin Desert in the United States, have rocky ground and gravel. The key defining feature of a desert is that it is dry, not what the ground looks like.
