What Makes a Landform

Mountains and Hills

Plains and Plateaus

A plain is a large, flat or gently rolling area of low elevation with little relief. Plains are very wide and cover large areas of land. Plateaus have steep sides (called escarpments) but a flat upper surface. The key difference is elevation and the shape of the top: a plain is low and flat, while a plateau is high and flat. To picture this, imagine an invented landform that spreads over hundreds of square miles with almost no change in elevation—that's a plain. Valleys

A valley forms a depression in the landscape. To picture this, imagine an invented landscape where two mountains stand on either side of a long, flat, low area—that low area is a valley. Valleys can be narrow (called a gorge or canyon) or wide and flat-bottomed, but in every case, the land inside the valley is lower in elevation than the surrounding terrain. Using Properties to Tell Landforms Apart

Pay attention to how these properties combine. A plateau and a mountain are both high, but a plateau's flat top makes it different. A plain and a valley are both low and flat, but a valley is surrounded by higher land while a plain spreads widely at the same elevation. What landform is this, and what properties tell you so?
To identify this landform, work through the three key questions:

Is it high or low in elevation? The data shows elevations between 3,500 and 3,600 feet, which is high. This rules out plains and valleys.

Is the top flat or peaked? The elevation varies only 100 feet across the entire 150-square-mile area, which means the top is essentially flat. This rules out mountains and hills, which have peaked summits.

What about the sides? The land drops sharply from 3,500 feet to 1,200 feet—a relief of 2,300 feet—on all sides. This sharp drop is the defining feature.

Answer: This is a plateau. A plateau is high (3,500 feet), has a flat top (only 100 feet of variation), and has steep sides (drops 2,300 feet sharply). The combination of high elevation plus a flat surface plus steep escarpments creates the plateau. This is different from a mountain because the top is flat, not peaked. It's different from a plain because it sits high above surrounding land, not low and wide.

Practice questions

An invented landform has an elevation of 800 feet, rises with steep slopes, and has a sharp peak at the top. The relief is 1,200 feet. Is this a mountain or a hill? Explain which property causes you to classify it as you do.

Answer: This is a hill. Although it has steep slopes and a peak, the relief of 1,200 feet is less than 2,000 feet, which is the defining threshold between hills and mountains. Relief is the most important property here because it directly measures how much the landform rises above surrounding land. Mountains have greater than 2,000 feet of relief; hills have less. The steepness and presence of a peak might suggest a mountain, but the relief property makes it a hill.

This question tests whether you understand that multiple properties combine to define a landform. Students often focus only on 'steep' or 'pointy' and miss that relief is the key measure. Can a hill turn into a mountain if it gets taller?

If the relief of a landform crossed 2,000 feet, yes, it would move from the 'hill' category to the 'mountain' category by definition. The definition is based on measurable properties, not whether a landform is 'important' or 'famous.'
Do valleys always run between mountains?
No. Valleys are simply low areas between higher surrounding land. That higher land can be mountains, hills, or even plateaus. A valley can also run between two ridges or between gentle hills. The defining feature is that the valley floor is lower than the terrain around it, not what type of high landforms surround it.
