Worked example
Is it high or low in elevation? The data shows elevations between 3,500 and 3,600 feet, which is high. This rules out plains and valleys.
Is the top flat or peaked? The elevation varies only 100 feet across the entire 150-square-mile area, which means the top is essentially flat. This rules out mountains and hills, which have peaked summits.
What about the sides? The land drops sharply from 3,500 feet to 1,200 feet—a relief of 2,300 feet—on all sides. This sharp drop is the defining feature.
Answer: This is a plateau. A plateau is high (3,500 feet), has a flat top (only 100 feet of variation), and has steep sides (drops 2,300 feet sharply). The combination of high elevation plus a flat surface plus steep escarpments creates the plateau. This is different from a mountain because the top is flat, not peaked. It's different from a plain because it sits high above surrounding land, not low and wide.
Practice questions
An invented landform has an elevation of 800 feet, rises with steep slopes, and has a sharp peak at the top. The relief is 1,200 feet. Is this a mountain or a hill? Explain which property causes you to classify it as you do.
Answer: This is a hill. Although it has steep slopes and a peak, the relief of 1,200 feet is less than 2,000 feet, which is the defining threshold between hills and mountains. Relief is the most important property here because it directly measures how much the landform rises above surrounding land. Mountains have greater than 2,000 feet of relief; hills have less. The steepness and presence of a peak might suggest a mountain, but the relief property makes it a hill.
Two invented landforms are both at low elevation and flat. One is 300 square miles of continuous flat land. The other is a narrow, flat strip surrounded on both sides by mountains. Which is the plain and which is the valley?
Answer: The 300-square-mile continuous flat land is the plain. The narrow, flat strip surrounded by mountains is the valley.
Can a landform be both high in elevation and flat on top? What is it called, and how does it differ from a mountain?

- Why do we need to learn these definitions instead of just looking at a picture?
- Definitions let you identify landforms from data, maps, and descriptions—not just pictures. When a geographer or engineer collects elevation data, they use these definitions to classify what they find. Learning the properties (elevation, relief, slope) means you can solve problems and read information scientifically, without needing to see a photo. It also ensures that everyone uses the same vocabulary, so that 'mountain' means the same thing everywhere.
- Is a plateau just a flat mountain?
- No. A plateau is not a flat-topped mountain; it's a distinct landform. A mountain has a peak or pointed summit. A plateau has a flat top and steep sides, which gives it a different shape and formation. Think of a plateau as a broad, high table, not a sharpened point. Both are high, but the shape is completely different, which makes them different landforms.
- Can a hill turn into a mountain if it gets taller?
- In the real world, landforms change very slowly over millions of years due to geological processes (which you'll learn about in later lessons). But for the purposes of this vocabulary lesson, we define a hill as relief under 2,000 feet and a mountain as relief above 2,000 feet. If the relief of a landform crossed 2,000 feet, yes, it would move from the 'hill' category to the 'mountain' category by definition. The definition is based on measurable properties, not whether a landform is 'important' or 'famous.'
- Do valleys always run between mountains?
- No. Valleys are simply low areas between higher surrounding land. That higher land can be mountains, hills, or even plateaus. A valley can also run between two ridges or between gentle hills. The defining feature is that the valley floor is lower than the terrain around it, not what type of high landforms surround it.
