The Seven Continents
North America and South America together form the Americas in the Western Hemisphere. Europe and Africa are in the Eastern Hemisphere, separated by the Mediterranean Sea. Asia is the largest continent and stretches across much of the Eastern Hemisphere. Australia is the smallest continent and sits in the Southern Hemisphere. Antarctica is located at the South Pole and is covered almost entirely in ice.
When locating continents on a globe, it helps to use reference lines you learned in earlier lessons. The equator divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, while the Prime Meridian and International Date Line divide the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. North America straddles the equator's northern side and the Prime Meridian's western side. Africa is positioned near the Prime Meridian and extends into both hemispheres. Understanding these reference points makes it easier to pinpoint any continent.
The Major Oceans
The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean. It borders North America and South America on its eastern edge and Asia and Australia on its western edge. The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest ocean and separates the Americas from Europe and Africa. The Indian Ocean lies between Africa, Asia, and Australia. The Arctic Ocean surrounds the North Pole and is covered partly by sea ice. The Southern Ocean surrounds Antarctica at the South Pole.
Oceans are interconnected and flow into one another, so the boundaries between them are not always sharp lines on a map. However, geographers recognize these five distinct regions based on their location, currents, and characteristics. When looking at a globe, notice how oceans dominate the Southern Hemisphere more than the Northern Hemisphere, and how they connect all the continents.
Spatial Relationships Between Continents and Oceans
These spatial relationships matter because they influenced how people traveled, traded, and settled throughout history. Continents near major oceans were often easier to reach by sea, which affected exploration and cultural exchange. When describing location on a globe, use directional words: north, south, east, west, northeast, southwest, and so on. You can also use reference lines like the equator and Prime Meridian. For instance, you might say "Australia is located south of the equator and east of the Indian Ocean" or "North America is west of the Atlantic Ocean and east of the Pacific Ocean." This precise language helps others understand exactly where a place is.
Using a Globe to Locate Continents and Oceans
To locate a continent or ocean on a globe, start by finding familiar reference points like the equator or Prime Meridian. Then move your eyes north, south, east, or west to find your target. For example, to find Asia, you might start at the Prime Meridian and move east, noting that Asia extends far into the Eastern Hemisphere. Practice rotating the globe to see how continents and oceans connect when viewed from different angles. This three-dimensional perspective is difficult to achieve on a flat map, which is why a globe is such a valuable tool for geography. Many maps try to flatten Earth onto paper, which can distort sizes and shapes—a globe avoids that problem.

Worked example
Now identify the oceans that border South America. Look to the east and you will see the Atlantic Ocean. Look to the west and you will see the Pacific Ocean. South America is bordered by both of these major oceans.
Next, find another continent near South America. To the north is North America, and to the northeast across the Atlantic is Europe. You could name either one.
Now put it together in a complete description: "South America is located in the Southern and Western Hemispheres. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. North America is located to its north."
Alternatively: "South America is located south of the equator and west of the Prime Meridian. It has the Atlantic Ocean on its eastern coast and the Pacific Ocean on its western coast. Europe lies across the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast."
Both answers use directional language, reference two oceans, mention another continent, and are based on what you can observe on a globe.

Flat maps have to stretch and squeeze Earth's features to fit on paper, which can make some places look larger or smaller than they really are. A globe also allows you to see how continents and oceans relate to each other from any angle by rotating it.
