What this lesson covers

In everyday life, we ask two very different kinds of questions. Some questions have one correct answer: "How old is my teacher?" or "What time does school start?" But other questions expect many different answers: "How much do students in sixth grade spend on lunch each week?" or "What is the favorite sport of kids at our school?" In this lesson, you'll learn how to spot the difference and write your own statistical questions—questions that help us understand patterns and trends by collecting data from real people and situations.

What Makes a Question Statistical?

A statistical question is one that you cannot answer with a single number. Instead, it is a question that you expect will have many different answers depending on who or what you measure. Statistical questions create variability in data.

For example, "What time do students wake up on a school day?" is a statistical question because different students wake up at different times. When you ask this question to many students, you will collect data that varies—some might say 6:30 a.m., others 7:00 a.m., and some 7:45 a.m. This variability is what makes it statistical.

In contrast, "What time does school start?" is not a statistical question. Everyone in your school knows the same answer—there is only one correct start time. There is no variability. Non-statistical questions ask for a single fact or measurement that is the same for everyone.

The key is to listen for the phrase "anticipates variability." This means the question is designed expecting that different answers will come back. If a question would get the same answer no matter who you ask, it is not statistical.

Examples of Statistical vs. Non-Statistical Questions

Here are some real examples to help you practice telling the difference.

Notice that statistical questions ask about a group of people or things and expect different responses. Non-statistical questions ask for one specific fact that does not change. When you see words like "students in our class," "kids at our school," or "people in your neighborhood," these are clues that the question might be statistical—but only if the answer will vary across that group.

Why Variability Matters

Variability is the reason we collect data. If every student in the class drank exactly 64 ounces of water per day, there would be no need to survey anyone—everyone would give the same answer. But in reality, students drink different amounts. Some drink 32 ounces, others drink 80 ounces, and some drink 100 ounces. This range of different answers is the variability.

When we collect data from statistical questions, we get a dataset with spread and patterns. We can then find the center of the data (like the average amount of water students drink), describe how spread out the data is, and notice patterns (like whether older students tend to drink more water than younger ones). None of this would be interesting or necessary if every answer were identical.

You cannot calculate a meaningful average or create a useful dot plot if everyone gives the same answer. Variability makes the data worth studying.

Formulating Your Own Statistical Questions

To write a statistical question, start with a topic you want to know about and then make sure it will produce varied answers. Use these steps:

First, identify what you want to learn about. For example, "sleep" or "exercise" or "favorite snack."

Second, decide whose data you will collect—a group that has variability. Examples: "students in sixth grade," "people in our town," "kids at this school," "players on our soccer team."

Third, phrase it as a question that opens the door to multiple different answers. Avoid "yes or no" questions. Instead of "Do students like pizza?" ask "What is the favorite food of students in our school?" This invites real variety.

For example, a strong statistical question is: "How many hours per week do students in sixth grade spend playing outside?" Different students will answer 0 hours, 5 hours, 10 hours, 15 hours, and so on. Another good one: "What type of pet do students in our class have?" Some will say dog, cat, fish, bird, or no pet. Both questions anticipate and expect variability.

Common Misconceptions

Many students think that any question asked to a group of people is automatically statistical. This is not true. "What grade are you in?" asked to sixth graders will get the same answer every time—it is not statistical even though you asked many people.

Another misconception is that if a question can be answered by looking something up or measuring one thing, it is not statistical. This is correct, but it confuses some students. "What is the average height of basketball players in the NBA?" might sound statistical because it says "average," but it is not—it is asking for one specific fact that you can look up. A true statistical question would be: "How tall are the basketball players on our school team?"

Also, be careful with questions that seem to invite variety but do not. "What is your lucky number?" sounds like it could be statistical, but many classrooms have already agreed that luck is not real or that lucky numbers are personal opinion rather than data worth collecting. The key is whether the question genuinely anticipates real, measurable variability in a group setting.

Worked example

Determine whether each of the following is a statistical question. Explain your thinking for each one.

(a) How much does a new bicycle cost?

(b) How much does a sixth grader spend on entertainment per month?

(c) What time do students in our grade eat lunch?
(a) "How much does a new bicycle cost?" is NOT a statistical question. This question is asking about a single item and a single answer. Although different bikes cost different amounts, the question asks for one specific price for "a new bicycle" rather than asking you to collect data across a group. If the question were "How much do bicycles cost in different stores?" then it would invite variability. But as written, it expects one answer.

(b) "How much does a sixth grader spend on entertainment per month?" is a statistical question. This asks about a group (sixth graders), and we expect different answers. Some students might spend 10 dollars per month, others 30 dollars, and others 50 dollars or more. There is clear variability in how much different students spend. When you collect this data from many students, you will get a range of answers.

(c) "What time do students in our grade eat lunch?" is NOT a statistical question, even though it mentions a group. In most schools, all students in a grade eat lunch at the same time or in the same lunch periods—there is no variability. Everyone eating lunch at 12:00 p.m. means this question will get the same answer over and over. If the question were changed to "How long do students spend eating lunch?" then it would be statistical because different students eat for different lengths of time.

Practice questions

Which of the following is a statistical question?
  1. What color are the eyes of students in our class?
  2. How many continents are there?
  3. What is the capital of France?
  4. How many wheels does a car have?

Answer: What color are the eyes of students in our class?

This question anticipates variability in data. Different students will have different eye colors—blue, brown, green, hazel, and others. You will collect a range of answers from the group. The other three options all have single, definite answers that do not change: there are always 7 continents, Paris is always the capital of France, and a car always has 4 wheels. These are non-statistical questions.
Write a statistical question about how students in your school spend their free time after school. Explain why your question is statistical.

Answer: Example: "How many hours per week do students in our school spend playing sports or doing physical activities?" This is statistical because different students will spend different amounts of time. Some might play sports for 0 hours, others 3 hours, and some 10 or more hours. The question asks about a group and anticipates that answers will vary.

A strong answer identifies a topic (free time), specifies the group (students in our school), and phrases the question so it expects varied answers (how many hours). The explanation should mention that different students do different activities or spend different amounts of time. Weaker answers might ask yes/no questions ("Do you play sports?") which do not invite the same kind of variability, or might ask about a single person rather than a group.
Your friend says, "What do students eat for breakfast?" is not a statistical question because not all students eat breakfast. Is your friend correct? Explain.

Answer: No, your friend is not correct. Even though not all students eat breakfast, the question is still statistical because among those who do eat breakfast—and across all students—the answers will vary widely. Some students eat cereal, others eat toast, some eat eggs, and many eat nothing. This variability means the question anticipates different answers across the group of students, which makes it statistical. The fact that some students skip breakfast actually adds to the variability of the data.

This question tests understanding of a common confusion: that a statistical question must apply equally to everyone in the group. The correct thinking is that a statistical question asks about a group and expects varied responses—even if not everyone participates the same way. The question still invites a range of different answers, which is what makes it statistical.

FAQ

Is a question statistical just because you ask it to many people?
No. You must ask it to many people AND expect to get different answers. If you ask 30 students "What time does lunch start?" and they all say 12:15 p.m., that is not a statistical question—there is no variability. A statistical question must anticipate that different people will give different answers.
Can a yes-or-no question ever be statistical?
Technically yes, but it is rare and usually awkward. A yes-or-no question works as statistical only if you expect different responses from different people—like "Do you have a pet?" because some students will say yes and others will say no. However, questions that invite variety in responses (like "What type of pet do you have?") are much better because they produce richer data. Avoid yes-or-no questions when you write statistical questions.
What if I ask a question that sounds statistical, but everyone in my group gives the same answer?
Then your question did not work out to be statistical in practice, even if you intended it to be. For example, "What is your favorite season?" sounds statistical, but if you ask 25 students and 24 of them say "summer" with only 1 saying "spring," there is very little variability. The question still anticipated variability (which is what makes it statistical in theory), but the data turned out to have very little variation. This can happen, and it is fine—you simply learned something about your group.
Are questions about opinions or preferences statistical questions?
Yes, if they ask a group to give different answers. "What is your favorite color?" is statistical because different people prefer different colors, and you expect that variety. However, be careful: questions about personal taste only work as statistical questions if the preference actually varies within your group. If everyone in your class genuinely likes the same color, you have learned that, but the question still anticipated variability when you asked it.
