Key terms
- Technical vocabulary.
- Specialized terms used by professionals and experts in a particular field or profession, chosen because they convey precise meaning that a regular word cannot.
- Domain-specific vocabulary.
- Words or phrases that belong to and are mainly used within a specific subject area, field of study, or area of knowledge.
- Context clues.
- Hints found in the words and sentences surrounding an unfamiliar word that help reveal its meaning.
- Explicit definition.
- A clear statement of what a word means, often set off by commas, dashes, parentheses, or the word 'means' or 'is.'

Worked example
In an ecosystem, every organism plays a role. Producers like plants use sunlight to make their own food. Consumers eat other organisms to survive. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead plants and animals and return nutrients to the soil. Without decomposers, dead matter would pile up and ecosystems would not be able to recycle nutrients.
Now use the context right there in that sentence. You see the phrase "such as bacteria and fungi"—this is an example that tells you what decomposers are. Then the text says they "break down dead plants and animals." That's their function, described right in the same sentence. The next sentence reinforces this: "Without decomposers, dead matter would pile up and ecosystems would not be able to recycle nutrients." This shows what would happen if decomposers didn't exist, which confirms that decomposers recycle nutrients.
So you can figure out that a decomposer is an organism (like bacteria and fungi) that breaks down dead material and returns nutrients to soil. The author gave you an example (bacteria and fungi), a function (breaking down dead matter), and even a consequence (what happens without them). You didn't need to look up the word; the text itself taught you what it means. Notice also that you could have broken down the word: de- means "to break apart" and composer relates to "compose," so "decomposer" literally suggests something that breaks apart or undoes composition. But the text's support was so clear that you didn't need to do that.

Read this sentence from a science article: "The conductor, a material that allows electricity to flow through it easily, is essential to any circuit." Based on the text, what is a conductor?

Reread this passage and explain how you determined the meaning of the word tributary. "Rivers that flow into a larger river are called tributaries. For example, the Mississippi River has many tributaries, including the Missouri River and the Arkansas River, that empty into it."
What does tributary mean, and which strategy did you use to figure it out?
Answer: A tributary is a river that flows into a larger river. The strategy used was a combination of definition and example—the text defines it directly in the first sentence ("rivers that flow into a larger river") and then provides specific examples (Missouri River and Arkansas River) to show what tributaries are.
Read this sentence: "The forest canopy, where tall trees form a dense layer high above the ground, filters sunlight and creates shade below." Without looking outside the text, explain what the forest canopy is and describe where you found the information that taught you this meaning.
Answer: The forest canopy is the dense layer of tall trees high above the ground. The information came from the definition provided in the sentence between the commas right after the word canopy. The rest of the sentence then shows what the canopy does (filters sunlight and creates shade), which further clarifies its meaning and location.
FAQ
- What should I do if I read a technical word and I can't figure out what it means from context?
- First, keep reading—often the author explains it more fully in the next sentence or paragraph. Second, check if the text has a glossary at the end or bolded key terms. Third, look at the word's structure for familiar roots or prefixes that might give you a clue. If the text is from a class unit you're studying, your teacher may have covered this vocabulary in class. The important thing is not to panic; in a well-written informational text, the author usually expects that you'll figure out the meaning from the reading itself.
- Is it okay to ask what a technical word means, or should I always try to figure it out myself?
- Both are fine. Trying to figure it out yourself builds important reading skills and helps you learn independently. But asking your teacher or a classmate is also smart, especially if the word is really important to understanding the main idea. In real life, people who work in specialized fields ask each other questions too. The goal is to understand the material, so use all the tools available—context clues, word parts, and asking for help.
- Will I understand technical vocabulary better if I just memorize the definitions?
- Not as well as if you learn the words through reading and use them in context. When you figure out a definition from a text passage, you remember it longer and understand how it's actually used. Memorizing a definition without context is like memorizing a sentence in a language you don't speak—you can repeat it but you won't really understand it. As you read more texts in science, history, and other subjects, you'll see the same technical words used over and over, and your understanding will deepen naturally. That's much more powerful than memorization.
- Do I need to understand every technical word in a text to understand the main idea?
- Not necessarily. If a text is about how photosynthesis works, then photosynthesis is essential. But if a text mentions a smaller technical detail you don't fully catch, you can usually still understand the overall message. Focus your energy on the technical words that seem most important to the author's main point. You'll often know which ones matter because authors emphasize them by repeating them, putting them in bold, or building entire sentences or paragraphs around them. As you gain experience reading in different subjects, you'll get better at judging which technical terms are essential to your understanding.
