Evidence is the proof that backs up your reason. It can be an observation (something you've seen or experienced), a documented example (a specific event or story with details), or a statement from a credible source (an expert, a study, or a reliable article). For the sleep reason above, evidence might be: "According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep, and early school start times make this difficult." or "After Lincoln High moved their start time to 8:30 a.m., attendance improved by 12 percent in the first semester."

The key is that your evidence must connect clearly to the specific reason underneath it, not just float around the topic.

Genuine Reasons vs. Restatements

A genuine reason explains why a claim is true by introducing a new idea or benefit. It passes the "because test": your claim should make sense followed by "because" and then your reason.

Unmatched evidence: "Harry Potter books have been translated into 80 languages, and the movies were all blockbusters." This relates to the topic (books vs. movies) but does nothing to prove that mental imagery helps memory—it's just a fact about popularity.

Here's a test: Look at your reason, then your evidence. Ask: "Does this evidence directly prove the reason I gave, or would someone reading this say, 'That's interesting, but so what? How does that prove your point?'" If it's the latter, you need different evidence.

The strength of your argument depends on this match. Readers see when evidence wanders and trust your writing less.

Types of Evidence: Observation, Example, and Credible Source

Each type of evidence works differently and carries different weight.

Observation is something you've personally seen, experienced, or measured. Example: "When I practiced piano for 30 minutes before a test, I noticed I felt more confident." Credible sources carry weight because they come from people or organizations whose job is to know the truth and report it accurately.

If your reason claims something about how the world works scientifically or socially, reach for a credible source.

Where Students Go Wrong

One of the most common mistakes is bringing in evidence that relates to the topic but doesn't support the specific reason. For instance, a student writes: "We should recycle because it's important for the environment." That sounds good, but "important for the environment" isn't a real reason—it just restates the claim. If the student then adds evidence like "Plastic takes 450 years to break down," that's a topic fact, but it doesn't prove why we should recycle or what we gain from it.

A better version: Claim: "We should recycle." Reason: "Recycling reduces the amount of garbage that goes to landfills, which saves money our town would otherwise spend on new landfill space." What if I have evidence that's true but doesn't really support my reason?
Then it's not the right evidence for that reason, even if it's interesting. Just because a fact is true doesn't mean it belongs in your argument. Save it for a different reason, use it in a different essay, or leave it out. It's better to have one strong piece of evidence that actually proves your reason than several facts that wander around the topic. Ask yourself: 'Does someone reading this evidence immediately see how it proves my reason, or would they ask, So what?'
