Worked example
For Source A, ask: Who created this? There is no author name. It says "GamingFans.com," but no person or expert is identified. This is our first concern. Can they know what they claim? We do not know, because we do not know who "they" are. There is no evidence of expertise or credentials. What would they gain? A website called "GamingFans.com" suggests the creators love gaming. They would gain readers and attention if people click and share the post. Their motivation is entertainment and building an audience, not necessarily accuracy.
For Source B, ask: Who created this? The author is Dr. Maria Chen, a named person with credentials shown. Can they know what they claim? Yes—she is a cognitive psychologist (trained expert), has a PhD (advanced degree), and has published 15 peer-reviewed studies (proven track record of rigorous research). The fact that it appears in a research journal means other experts have checked her work. What would they gain? Dr. Chen's motivation is professional: she wants to publish accurate research that holds up to scrutiny. If her research were wrong, other scientists would catch it and her reputation would suffer.
Conclusion: Source B is far more credible for your research question. It comes from an identified expert with real expertise and systems in place to verify accuracy. Source A tells you that gaming fans like games, but it does not provide trustworthy information about whether games improve problem-solving. You should use Source B. You might still read Source A as an example of enthusiasm, but you would not cite it as evidence in your research.

You find a social media post that says: "My cousin took vitamin C every day and never got sick last winter. Vitamin C prevents colds!" Why is this not a credible source for the claim that vitamin C prevents colds?
Answer: The post comes from an unnamed social media user who has no medical or scientific training. One person's experience is not the same as scientific evidence. The creator has no demonstrated expertise in medicine or nutrition. Also, the person's cousin might not have gotten sick for other reasons, such as luck or good hygiene. A credible source would be a medical organization or a scientist who studied many people and compared those who took vitamin C to those who did not.
A website about climate change is written by scientists from a university and includes references to peer-reviewed research. However, the website is sponsored by an oil company. Does the sponsorship make this source not credible?

This shows deep expertise and a motivation to produce accurate, detailed work. Wikipedia can be useful as a starting point, but anyone can edit it, and there is no guarantee that an editor has expertise in local history. For serious research, the historian's book is the better source.

- If a source has errors, does that mean it is not credible?
- Not necessarily. Even credible sources can contain a small mistake. Credibility is about the overall system and process, not perfection. A source written by an expert in a peer-reviewed journal is still credible even if it has a typo or one small factual error. However, if a source has many errors, that is a sign the creator did not take care with accuracy. Always compare multiple sources. If they mostly agree except for small details, the sources are probably credible. If they completely contradict each other, you need to investigate further.
- Why does it matter who wrote something if the information is true?
- Because you need to know whether to trust the information in the first place. If you do not know who wrote it or whether they have expertise, you cannot evaluate whether the information is actually true. - Yes. In fact, all sources are biased in some way because all creators have perspectives and motivations. A news organization has a bias toward telling interesting stories because that is how it makes money. Credibility means the creator has the expertise and motivation to get the facts right, not that they have no bias. When you evaluate a source, you look for credibility and also identify the bias so you understand the perspective you are reading.
- What should I do if I cannot find information about the author?
- That is a warning sign. If you cannot find who created the source or any information about their credentials, you should be very cautious. The source might still contain useful information, but you should not rely on it as your main evidence. Try to find other sources where you can identify the author. If you must use an anonymous source, make sure you can verify the information another way—for example, by finding the same facts reported by a named expert somewhere else.
