A good research question is the engine of a research project. It points you toward sources, helps you evaluate whether information is useful, and keeps you from getting lost in endless reading. In this lesson, you'll learn what makes a question researchable: not too narrow, not too broad, answerable by facts rather than feelings, and rich enough to require real investigation. You'll practice finding the right balance so your project stays focused and manageable while still being genuinely interesting to explore.

What Makes a Question Researchable?

A researchable question has four key qualities. First, it is answerable by evidence—facts, data, expert opinions, and observations—not by personal preference or opinion. "Is pizza the best food?" is not researchable because there is no objective answer. "What ingredients are most common in pizza across different cultures?" is researchable because you can find and analyze real data. Second, a researchable question must be narrow enough to answer fully within your project's scope. "What is technology?" is too broad; you could spend years on it. "How have smartphones changed the way students communicate at lunch?" is more manageable. Third, the question should be broad enough to need multiple sources. "What is the capital of France?" is too narrow—one source confirms it. "What are the major historical events that shaped modern Paris?" requires you to read several sources. Finally, a good research question should be specific and clear, so you know exactly what you are looking for when you start researching.

Too Narrow or Too Broad?

Finding the middle ground is the biggest challenge. A question that is too narrow can often be answered in a single sentence from one source. "When was the Great Wall of China completed?" has a factual answer, but it does not require much investigation. A better approach: "Why was the Great Wall of China built, and how did its purpose change over time?" This pushes you to explore multiple sources and synthesize information. Conversely, a question that is too broad leaves you overwhelmed. "Why do wars happen?" could fill a library. Instead, try "What were the main causes of the American Civil War?" or even narrower, "How did disagreements over slavery lead to the start of the American Civil War?" Test your question by asking: Can I answer this thoroughly in the time I have? Will I need to read more than one or two sources? Am I likely to find conflicting information that I'll need to weigh? If you answer yes to these, your question is probably in the right zone.

Personal Preference vs. Factual Questions

One of the most common mistakes is writing a question that asks for an opinion. "Should students have more lunch time?" depends on what people believe is fair or healthy—it is not researchable. You can research facts related to it: "How does lunch break length affect student test scores?" or "How much time do students spend eating in schools across the United States?" These can be answered with evidence. The key is to ask what is or how rather than should. Questions starting with "what," "how," "why," and "when" tend to be more researchable than those starting with "should," "is it better," or "do you think." Remember: research is about discovering what the evidence shows, not arguing for what you already believe. If you find evidence that surprises you or contradicts what you expected, that is a sign your question was a good one.

Refocusing Your Question as You Research

Your research question does not have to stay frozen in place. As you begin reading, you may discover that your question is too hard to answer with the sources available, or that a different angle is more interesting. Narrowing or refocusing is a normal, valuable part of research. Suppose you start with "How have animals adapted to climate change?" After reading a few articles, you realize most sources focus on specific animals or habitats. You might refocus to "How are polar bears adapting to the loss of sea ice?" This is more specific and the sources will support a focused answer. On the other hand, you might start with "What is coral bleaching?" and realize you want to dig deeper into causes, leading you to refocus: "What causes coral bleaching, and why is it getting worse?" Keep a record of how your question evolves. This shows your thinking process and is often valuable to mention in your final project. The goal is a question that excites you, that sources actually address, and that you can reasonably answer.

How to Get Started

Begin by picking a broad topic that interests you. You don't need a perfect question yet—just a subject area. If your teacher assigned "the water cycle," that is your starting point. If you get to choose, pick something that makes you curious: maybe it is a person, an event, a scientific discovery, an animal, or a social issue. Then ask yourself what you wonder about within that topic. Write down several questions, no matter how rough they are. "Why do some places have more rain than others?" "How do people get fresh water?" "Are there animals that never drink water?" "What happens when it does not rain for a long time?" Now test each one. Is it answerable by evidence, or is it mainly opinion? Is it narrow enough that you can find solid sources without drowning in information? Is it broad enough that you will need at least two or three sources? The question that passes these tests is your working research question. You are ready to start searching for sources.

Worked example

Suppose you are interested in sharks. Your first idea is "Are sharks dangerous?" Test this question and improve it if needed.
First, check if it is answerable by evidence. "Are sharks dangerous?" requires a yes-or-no answer that depends on how you define "dangerous." That makes it more opinion-based than factual. Second, ask if it is too narrow or too broad. It is pretty broad—sharks are found everywhere and attack in different ways. So you need to refocus. A better version: "How many shark attacks occur each year, and what makes some beaches more dangerous than others?" Now you are asking for specific, measurable information. This requires multiple sources (articles on shark attack statistics, geography, and behavior), and the answer is not just yes or no. You could narrow further based on what you find. For example, after reading one article, you might realize most attacks happen in certain regions, leading you to focus: "What conditions in Australian waters make them a shark attack hotspot?" This is narrow enough to research thoroughly but still broad enough to need several sources. You have a workable research question that will guide your project forward.

Your teacher assigns a research project on transportation. Which of the following is the best research question?

  2. What were the first cars like?
  3. How have cars changed since the 1900s, and what problems do modern cars create for cities?

This question is answerable by evidence (historical facts and current data), narrow enough to explore without endless sources, broad enough to require multiple sources, and does not depend on opinion. "Are cars better than buses?" and "Is public transportation good?" ask for preferences, not facts. "What were the first cars like?" is too narrow—one source could answer it completely.
You want to research a topic related to space exploration. Your first question is "Why is space interesting?" Explain why this is not a good research question and rewrite it to make it researchable.

Answer: This is not researchable because it depends on personal opinion and preference. People find different things interesting for different reasons. A better question might be: "What are the main goals of the International Space Station, and what scientific discoveries have been made there?" or "How has space exploration changed our understanding of the universe?" These questions can be answered with facts from multiple sources.

The original question asks for an opinion that varies by person, so there is no objective answer. A researchable question should be answerable by evidence and facts. The rewritten versions ask for specific information (goals, discoveries, or changes in understanding) that researchers have documented and that you can find in reliable sources. They are also specific enough to research thoroughly without being so narrow that one source answers everything.
You are researching climate change. Your starting question is "How is climate change affecting Earth?" Is this too narrow, too broad, or just right? Explain your answer and suggest a refocused version if needed.

Answer: This question is too broad. Climate change affects nearly every system on Earth—weather patterns, ocean levels, ice sheets, animal habitats, agriculture, human health, and more. A project trying to cover all of this would be unmanageable. A better, refocused question might be: "How is rising ocean temperature causing changes in fish migration patterns?" or "What is causing coral bleaching, and what are scientists doing to protect coral reefs?" These are narrow enough to explore deeply using available sources but still broad enough to need multiple sources and investigation.

A question that affects every part of Earth is too large to handle in one research project. By narrowing to a specific effect (fish migration, coral bleaching) or a specific aspect (causes, current solutions), you create a question you can actually answer thoroughly. Notice that both refocused questions still ask "how" or "what," which signals they are answerable by facts and evidence.

FAQ

What if I am not sure my research question is good enough?
A good way to test it is to ask yourself: "Can I answer this question in the time I have?" "Will I need to find at least two or three sources?" "Can I find the information, or is it too specialized?" "Can it be answered by facts, not opinions?" If you say yes to these, your question is workable. You can always refocus it once you start researching and see what sources actually exist.
Can my research question change after I start researching?
Yes, and this is completely normal. As you read sources, you might find that your question is harder to answer than you expected, or you might discover a more interesting angle. You can narrow it, broaden it, or refocus it entirely. Just keep track of how it changes and be ready to explain why you adjusted it in your project.
How is a research question different from a thesis statement?
A research question is what you want to find out at the start of your project. A thesis statement is what you conclude after researching. For example, a research question might be "How have smartphones changed teenage friendships?" After researching, your thesis might be "Smartphones have made it easier for teenagers to stay in constant contact, but they have also reduced face-to-face conversation." Your question guides the research; your thesis is your final answer.
Should my research question be a yes-or-no question?
Usually not. Yes-or-no questions are often too narrow or too opinion-based. Questions starting with "what," "how," "why," or "when" tend to lead to more interesting research. For example, instead of "Do video games affect learning?", ask "How do video games affect student concentration and memory?" This opens up the research and requires more investigation.
