What this lesson covers

Every research project that falls apart usually falls apart in the first ten minutes, when a student writes "my topic is climate change" and starts searching. A topic is a territory; a research question is an address. Without the address, you collect hundreds of facts that never add up to an argument.

In this lesson you will learn to funnel a broad subject down to a question that is narrow enough to answer in the space you have, open enough to require real investigation, and grounded enough that evidence — not just opinion — can settle it. Then you will learn to read your own question for clues about what kind of source can actually answer it: a primary document from the moment itself, or a secondary analysis written later; a scholarly study with citations, or a popular article written for general readers. Getting this match right is what makes the rest of the research process manageable.

Funneling a Broad Topic into a Question

Narrowing is not one leap; it is a series of deliberate cuts. Start with the broad topic, then add limits one at a time until you can picture the evidence you would need.

The most useful limits are population (who?), place (where?), time (when?), and aspect (which part of this?). Watch how they stack:

Notice that each cut makes the searching easier, not harder. A narrow question tells you exactly which keywords to type and which results to ignore.

The scope test is simple: can you answer this question responsibly in the length assigned? A question like "What caused World War II?" needs a book. "Why did the United States delay entering World War II until December 1941?" fits an essay. If you cannot imagine the shape of the finished answer, narrow again.

The opposite error is over-narrowing. "How many minutes did students at my school sleep last Tuesday?" is answerable, but no published source addresses it, and the answer teaches nobody anything. A good question sits in the zone where real sources exist but a real interpretive choice remains.

Where students most often go wrong is treating the first narrowing as final. Expect your question to shift once you start reading. Discovering that the sources cluster around anxiety rather than sleep is not failure — it is information, and you should revise the question to match the evidence that actually exists.

What Makes a Question Researchable

A researchable question has three properties: it is open, it is answerable by evidence, and it is honestly uncertain to you when you start.

Open means the question cannot be closed with yes, no, or a single fact. "Did Congress pass the Voting Rights Act in 1965?" is a lookup, not research. Questions beginning with how, why, to what extent, and in what ways force analysis, because the answer must be assembled rather than retrieved.

Answerable by evidence means the dispute is factual or interpretive, not purely moral. "Is capital punishment wrong?" cannot be settled by sources; it is a values judgment. But "What effect has DNA testing had on capital sentencing in the United States since 1989?" can be investigated, and the findings might then inform a values argument.

Honestly uncertain means you have not already decided. If your question is "Why is school start time the main cause of teen sleep loss?," you have hidden a conclusion inside the question and you will read only the sources that agree with you — a habit called confirmation bias.

One more habit worth building: after drafting a question, write one sentence describing the kind of evidence that would answer it. If you cannot name that evidence, the question is not yet researchable.

Primary and Secondary Sources

A primary source comes from inside the event, period, or phenomenon you are studying. A secondary source stands outside it and analyzes, interprets, or summarizes.

Primary sources include letters, diaries, speeches, laws, treaties, photographs, interviews you conduct, census data, original scientific studies reporting the researchers' own data, and — in literature — the novel, poem, or play itself. Secondary sources include textbooks, biographies, documentaries, literary criticism, review articles, and news analysis written well after the fact.

The crucial idea is that the label depends on your question, not on the object alone. A 1963 newspaper editorial about the March on Washington is a secondary source if your question is what happened at the march; it is a primary source if your question is how white Southern newspapers framed the civil rights movement. Ask yourself: is this document evidence, or is it commentary on my evidence?

Strong research usually uses both. Primary sources give you material nobody else has interpreted your way; secondary sources give you context, established findings, and the ongoing conversation you are joining. A paper built only on secondary sources tends to repeat other people's conclusions. A paper built only on primary sources tends to reinvent, badly, what specialists already established. A common misstep is calling any old document primary — age is irrelevant. Proximity to the thing being studied is what counts.

Scholarly and Popular Sources, and Matching Them to the Question

The scholarly/popular distinction is about audience, review process, and evidence trail — a separate axis from primary/secondary. A source can be scholarly and primary (a chemistry paper reporting original data), scholarly and secondary (a review article synthesizing forty such papers), popular and primary (a survivor's magazine memoir), or popular and secondary (a news explainer).

Now match. Read the verbs and nouns in your question, and they will tell you what to look for.

If your question asks what happened, you need primary documents plus reliable reporting. If it asks what causes or what effect, you need scholarly studies with data. If it asks how a text works, the text itself is your primary source and literary criticism is your secondary. If it asks how people at the time understood something, contemporary newspapers, letters, and speeches are primary evidence, whatever their accuracy.

A practical sequence: use a popular article or an encyclopedia entry to learn vocabulary and names, then use those terms as keywords in a library database to find scholarly work, then follow that work's reference list backward to the primary material. Background reading is a launchpad, not a citation.

Where students go wrong here is grabbing whatever loads fastest. If your question demands data on sleep duration and your only sources are opinion columns, the problem is not the writing — it is the mismatch between question and evidence.

Key terms

Research question.
A single, focused question that guides an investigation; it is open-ended, answerable through evidence, and narrow enough to address in the assigned length.
Scope.
The breadth of a question, set by limits on population, place, time, and aspect. Too broad and it cannot be answered; too narrow and no sources address it.
Primary source.
A source created inside the event, period, or phenomenon under study — a speech, diary, law, photograph, dataset, interview, or the literary work itself.
Secondary source.
A source that analyzes, interprets, or summarizes primary material from outside it, such as a biography, textbook, documentary, or work of literary criticism.
Scholarly source.
Work written by specialists for specialists, normally peer-reviewed and documented with a full reference list; the usual home for original data and methods.
Popular source.
Work written for a general audience by journalists or staff writers, edited but not peer-reviewed, valuable for current events, context, and leads to better sources.
Peer review.
The process in which independent experts evaluate a manuscript's methods and conclusions before a scholarly journal agrees to publish it.
Confirmation bias.
The tendency to seek and accept only evidence that supports a conclusion you already hold, often caused by writing an answer into the research question.

Worked example

Your teacher assigns a five-page research paper on the broad topic "food." Narrow it to a researchable question and identify the source types that could answer it.
Step 1 — Find an aspect you can care about. "Food" splits into production, nutrition, culture, policy, and access. Choose access.

Step 2 — Add a population and a place. Access to what, for whom, where? Try: access to fresh groceries in low-income urban neighborhoods in the United States.

Step 3 — Add a time frame and an angle. Since when, and what about it? Try: since 2010, and the angle is whether new supermarkets actually change what people eat.

Step 4 — Write it as an open question. "Do food deserts exist?" is a yes/no lookup. "Are food deserts bad?" is a value judgment. Instead: How effectively have new supermarket openings improved diet quality in low-income U.S. urban neighborhoods since 2010?

Step 5 — Run the scope test. Can five pages handle it? Yes, because the question targets one intervention (supermarket openings), one outcome (diet quality), one population, and one decade. If sources prove overwhelming, add a single city.

Step 6 — Name the evidence the question demands. The words "how effectively" and "improved" require measured outcomes, so you need studies that compare diet before and after an opening.

Step 7 — Map source types. Scholarly primary: public-health journal articles reporting original before-and-after data. Scholarly secondary: a review article synthesizing several such studies, useful for seeing where researchers disagree. Primary non-scholarly: USDA food access data, city zoning records, an interview with a neighborhood grocer. Popular secondary: a newspaper feature on one store's opening — good for a vivid opening paragraph and for names of researchers to search, not for your central claim.

Step 8 — Sequence the search. Read the newspaper feature first for vocabulary ("food desert," "food swamp," "diet quality index"), search those terms in a library database, then mine the reference lists of the best article you find.

Practice questions

A student is studying how Americans reacted to the 1969 moon landing. Which source would function as a PRIMARY source for that question?

Answer: A letter to the editor printed in a Kansas newspaper in July 1969

The question is about reactions at the time, so evidence of those reactions must come from the time. A 1969 letter to the editor is a direct record of one American's response, making it primary for this question. The documentary, textbook, and budget analysis all interpret the era from outside it, which makes them secondary here. Notice that the letter would be secondary if the question were "What happened during the Apollo 11 mission?" — the label depends on the question you are asking.
Rewrite this weak question so it is researchable, then explain what makes your version stronger: "Is video gaming bad for kids?"

Answer: Sample rewrite: "What does research since 2015 indicate about the relationship between daily gaming time and attention span in children aged 8 to 12?" It is stronger because it replaces a yes/no value judgment with an open question about a measurable relationship, limits the population and time frame, and names the specific evidence needed — studies measuring gaming time against attention outcomes.

The original fails all three tests for a researchable question. It is closed (yes or no), it is a value judgment ("bad" by whose standard?), and it is unbounded (which kids, which games, which effect?). A complete rewrite fixes each problem: swap the judgment word for a specific outcome, add population and time limits, and open the question with what, how, or to what extent. Your wording may differ, but check that you can name the evidence that would answer it — if you cannot, narrow again.
Explain the difference between the primary/secondary distinction and the scholarly/popular distinction, and give one example of a source that is both secondary and scholarly.

Answer: Primary versus secondary describes a source's distance from the thing being studied: primary sources come from inside the event, secondary sources analyze it from outside. Scholarly versus popular describes the audience and review process: scholarly work is written by specialists for specialists and is peer-reviewed with full citations, while popular work is written for general readers. The two axes are independent. A journal review article synthesizing thirty studies on adolescent sleep is both secondary (it interprets other researchers' data) and scholarly (peer-reviewed, heavily cited).

Students often collapse these two ideas, assuming "scholarly" means "secondary" and "primary" means "old." Keeping them separate lets you describe any source with two independent labels, which is exactly what you need when planning a search: your question might require primary evidence that happens to be popular, such as a magazine advertisement, or scholarly evidence that happens to be primary, such as an original experiment.

FAQ

How narrow should my research question be?
Narrow enough that you can picture the finished answer. A useful rule of thumb is roughly one major limit per page of assigned writing: a two-page paper needs a question tightly bounded by population, place, time, and aspect, while a ten-page paper can support a broader angle. If your first three database searches return thousands of results that all seem relevant, narrow further. If they return almost nothing, you have over-narrowed — remove one limit, usually the place or the date range, and try again.
Is a newspaper article primary or secondary?
It depends entirely on your question. If you are researching what happened at an event, a reporter's account written afterward is secondary — the reporter is interpreting evidence for you. If you are researching how the press covered that event, or how people at the time understood it, the same article becomes primary evidence of coverage and public understanding. Always ask whether the document is the thing you are studying or a commentary on it.
Can I use Wikipedia or an encyclopedia for a research paper?
Use it as a launchpad, not as a cited source. Background reference works are excellent for learning the vocabulary of a field, the names of key people and studies, and the rough outline of a debate — all of which give you better keywords for a library database. What they cannot give you is the specific, documented evidence your question needs. A well-built encyclopedia entry has a reference list at the bottom; that list, not the entry, is the real value.
What if I cannot find sources for my question?
Diagnose before you abandon it. First, check your keywords — scholars may use different terminology than you do, so look at the vocabulary in one relevant article and search those terms instead. Second, check the scope: an over-narrow question about one school or one week will have no published sources, so widen the population or time frame. Third, check whether the question is answerable by evidence at all; purely moral questions return opinion pieces because no data can settle them. Revising the question in response to what the sources actually contain is normal research practice, not a setback.
