How the AP World History SAQ Is Built and Scored

Every SAQ has three parts, labeled (a), (b), and (c), and each part is worth exactly one point — three points total. There is no thesis requirement and no penalty for a weak opening sentence, because there should be no opening sentence at all. You answer the prompt directly.

The verbs in each part tell you what the rubric wants. "Identify" asks for a specific, accurate statement — one clear sentence usually does it. "Explain" asks you to show cause, effect, or reasoning — you must connect a development to a why or how, not just name it. "Describe" sits in between: give specific characteristics, more than a name but less than full causation.

Budget roughly 12–13 minutes for one SAQ. Graders read fast and reward clarity, so write in complete sentences, address the stimulus when told to, and never make a grader hunt for your answer inside a paragraph.

Reading a Quantitative Stimulus Like the Potosí Table

A data table is a gift because the evidence is literally printed for you — but only if you read it correctly. Before writing anything, spend thirty seconds interrogating the table: What is being measured? What are the units and the time span? Which direction is the trend moving, and where are the sharp changes?

Use this sample stimulus for the rest of the lesson:

Notice the story the numbers tell: output climbs sharply after the 1570s, peaks around 1590–1610, then declines. That 1570s jump is not random — it aligns with the introduction of the mercury amalgamation process and the mita forced-labor system under Viceroy Toledo. A strong SAQ answer names the specific figure ("output rose from 3.0 to 7.0 million pesos") AND ties it to a historical cause. When a prompt says "using the table" or "based on the data," you must quote or paraphrase an actual number. Vague phrases like "silver went up" leave the point on the table.

Turning Evidence Into a Point-Earning Explanation

The gap between a 2 and a 3 is almost always the "explain" part. Students identify a fact but stop before showing why it matters. The rubric wants a logical link, and the cleanest way to guarantee one is a two-clause sentence: state the development, then use a connector like "because," "which led to," or "as a result" to reach the consequence.

For Potosí, useful explanatory chains include: silver flowed across the Atlantic to Spain and across the Pacific via Manila to China, where high demand for silver (partly driven by China's silver-based tax system) made it enormously valuable; this integrated the Americas into a genuinely global economy for the first time. Another chain: heavy silver inflows into Spain contributed to price inflation, and Spain spent silver faster than it developed domestic industry.

A common misconception is that more detail always helps. It does not. Over-writing wastes time and buries the answer. Aim for two to four sentences per part. The grader is looking for the single required idea, correctly stated and, where asked, causally connected to the stimulus. Precision beats volume every time.

A Repeatable Attack Plan for Table SAQs

Build a habit you can run under time pressure. First, read all three parts before writing, because part (c) often asks you to explain a consequence of what you identified in (a). Second, restate the task verb in your head so you match effort to reward — don't write a paragraph for an "identify."

Third, anchor every stimulus-based answer to a specific figure or comparison from the table. Fourth, for explanation parts, force a because/therefore link. Fifth, keep each answer self-contained; label them (a), (b), (c) so nothing is missed.

Content connects to neighboring topics you already know — maritime empires, the Columbian Exchange, coerced labor — but in the SAQ your job is to deploy that knowledge in tight, targeted form, not to write an essay. The skill being tested here is compression: correct, specific, and connected, in the fewest words that earn the point.

Use the Potosí silver-output table to answer all three parts.

(a) Identify ONE trend in silver production shown in the table. (b) Explain ONE cause of the trend you identified in part (a). (c) Explain ONE effect of American silver production on economies OUTSIDE the Americas in the period 1450–1750.
Start with part (a). The verb is "identify," so give a specific, data-grounded fact in one sentence: "Registered silver output at Potosí rose sharply from about 3.0 million pesos in the 1550s to a peak of about 7.0 million pesos in the 1590s before declining to roughly 3.5 million by the 1650s." This cites actual figures and states a clear trend, satisfying the "using the table" expectation.

For part (b), the verb is "explain," so name a cause and link it to the rise. "Output surged after the 1570s because the Spanish introduced the mercury amalgamation process, which allowed profitable refining of lower-grade ore, and expanded the mita forced-labor system, which supplied the large workforce needed to increase extraction." Notice the because-clause doing the causal work.

For part (c), move beyond the Americas. "American silver flowed across the Pacific through the Manila galleons to China, where strong demand — fueled by China's shift to a silver-based tax system — gave the metal high value; this drew enormous quantities of silver into Asia and tied China firmly into a global trade network." This explains an effect on an economy outside the Americas with a clear cause-and-effect chain.

Each part is two to three sentences, directly answers the verb, and earns its point.

Practice questions

An SAQ part reads: "Explain ONE reason for the decline in Potosí silver output shown after the 1610s." Which response would most likely earn the point?

The task verb is "explain," which requires a cause linked to the effect. The correct choice names a specific cause (ore depletion) and connects it to lower output with a because-clause. The first choice only restates the trend, the third gives background with no causation, and the fourth is a relevant fact but does not explain the production decline.
Using the Potosí table, identify ONE piece of quantitative evidence that shows the peak of silver production, and explain why anchoring your answer to a specific figure matters on the SAQ.

Answer: The table shows output peaking at about 7.0 million pesos in the 1590s, the highest value in the data.

A full answer states the peak figure (approximately 7.0 million pesos in the 1590s) drawn directly from the table. Citing the specific number matters because when a prompt says to use the stimulus, the rubric expects concrete evidence from it; vague phrasing like "production was high" does not demonstrate that you read the data and can leave the point unearned.
A student writing part (c) about an effect of silver in Europe writes: "Silver was really important to Spain and helped the economy a lot." Explain why this would not earn the point and rewrite it so it would.

Answer: It fails because it is vague and states no specific cause-and-effect relationship.

The sentence names no mechanism and no concrete effect, so a grader cannot credit an explanation. A point-earning revision: "Large inflows of American silver expanded Spain's money supply, which contributed to sustained inflation known as the price revolution, and because Spain spent silver on imports and wars rather than domestic industry, its long-term economic base weakened." This states a specific effect and connects it causally.

FAQ

Do I need a thesis statement on an SAQ?
No. Unlike the DBQ and LEQ, the SAQ has no thesis and no essay structure. You answer parts (a), (b), and (c) directly, each in a few sentences. Writing an introduction wastes time and earns nothing.
How long should each SAQ answer be?
Usually two to four sentences per part. "Identify" parts can be a single precise sentence; "explain" parts need enough to show a cause-and-effect link. Longer is not better — graders reward correct, specific, connected answers, not volume.
When a prompt says "using the table," do I have to quote a number?
You should reference specific data — a figure, a decade, or a clear comparison from the table. Paraphrasing a number is fine, but a vague statement that ignores the data risks not earning the point because you haven't shown you used the stimulus.
What's the difference between "identify" and "explain" on the rubric?
"Identify" wants a specific correct fact; you name something accurately. "Explain" wants reasoning — you must connect that fact to a cause, effect, or significance using a because/therefore link. Missing the causal connection is the most common reason "explain" points are lost.
