The Factory System and Railroads
Factories imposed discipline: fixed hours, supervised labor, and division of tasks. Water power first drove these mills, but the steam engine—improved by James Watt—freed factories from riverbanks, allowing them to cluster in coal-rich towns and cities. This drove rapid urbanization.

The United States industrialized rapidly in the 19th century, drawing on vast natural resources, immigrant labor, and continental railroads. By 1900 it rivaled or exceeded Britain in output.
