How the QA FRQ Is Built (and Scored)

Part A is nearly free: read the axis or column and copy a number or label. Part B asks for a trend or comparison — you must reference data, not just say "it went up." Part C usually asks you to draw a conclusion that combines data points or compares two variables. Part D moves fully into course content: the data becomes a springboard to explain a political process, behavior, or principle.

A common misconception is that longer answers score higher. They do not. Readers look for the specific required element. Answer each part in one to three sentences, label your responses A, B, C, and D, and always tie claims back to the data when the prompt asks you to.

Notice several things. The congressional share is a percentage of all 535 voting members. The population share stays essentially constant near 51%. The gap between the two columns is the story: even at the 2021 peak, women held about 27% of seats while making up roughly 51% of the population.

When a QA source spans decades, the exam almost always wants you to describe change over time (Part B) and then compare two quantities (Part C). Timing, Structure, and Common Point-Losers

On exam day you have roughly 20 minutes for the QA question. Spend two minutes reading the source, then write concise labeled answers. Because each part is independent, a weak Part D does not cost you the Part A point — so always attempt every part.

The most frequent mistakes are predictable. First, describing a trend without citing data in Part B. Second, restating numbers in Part C without an actual conclusion or comparison.
