Notice the second version names the concept and describes it operating on the actual subject. A useful habit is to write the person's name in the sentence; it forces application. If your sentence would still be true with the scenario deleted, it is a definition, not an application, and it will not score.

Avoid hedging words like "maybe" or "could be," and never define a term by using the term itself. "Assimilation is when you assimilate new information" earns nothing.

Explain how each of the following applies to Devon: (a) classical conditioning, (b) extinction, (c) positive reinforcement, (d) accommodation.
Start by classifying each behavior. Devon's original fear is automatic, so parts (a) and (b) involve classical conditioning; the sticker system is chosen behavior, so (c) is operant.

(a) Classical conditioning: The dog bite (unconditioned stimulus) produced fear (unconditioned response). Because the dog was present during the bite, the dog became a conditioned stimulus that now triggers fear as a conditioned response in Devon.

(b) Extinction: By repeatedly exposing Devon to dogs that never bite him, the therapist weakens the association, so the conditioned fear response gradually fades — this is extinction of the conditioned response.

(c) Positive reinforcement: Devon's parents add a desirable stimulus (a sticker) after he approaches a dog calmly, which increases how often he approaches dogs. Adding something pleasant to increase a behavior is positive reinforcement.

(d) Accommodation: Devon originally held a schema that "all dogs are dangerous." His new experiences force him to revise that schema to "most dogs are safe," which is accommodation because he changed the schema itself rather than just adding an example to it.

Answer: No, it will not earn the point as written because it is only a definition and does not apply the concept to Leo.

AP readers award application points only when the response ties the concept to the scenario. The sentence correctly defines object permanence but never mentions Leo or his toy. A scoring version would read: "Leo demonstrates object permanence when he searches for the toy after it is hidden, showing he knows it still exists even though he cannot see it." Naming the person and the specific action converts a definition into an application.
A prompt asks you to distinguish negative reinforcement from punishment in a scenario where a driver buckles their seatbelt to stop an annoying beeping sound. Which process is at work and why?
