Graders reward specific, correct connections between a psychological term and the scenario in the prompt, and they penalize vague summaries. How Cognition FRQs Are Structured

AP Psychology free-response prompts ask you to apply concepts to a described situation rather than recite definitions. A typical cognition prompt names a scenario (a student studying, a witness recalling a crime, a person solving a puzzle) and then lists several psychology terms. Your job is to explain how each term operates in that specific scenario.

The scoring works point by point. Each term is usually worth one point, and you earn it only if you both show you understand the concept and tie it to the details of the prompt. Simply defining the term almost never scores.

Because each point is independent, a weak answer on one term does not sink the others. Write one focused sentence or two per term, address them in the order listed, and never combine two required terms into one blurry statement where the grader cannot tell which idea you meant.

The Define-and-Apply Sentence

The most reliable FRQ move is the define-and-apply sentence: state the concept correctly, then connect it to a named detail from the prompt. A useful template is: Concept means X, so in this scenario the person Y (specific action).

Suppose a prompt asks about the serial position effect for a student memorizing a grocery list. A weak answer says "The serial position effect helped her remember the list." That earns nothing — it does not show what the effect is or which items were affected. A scoring answer says: "The serial position effect means items at the beginning and end of a list are recalled better than the middle, so Maria most easily remembers milk (first) and bread (last) but forgets the eggs in the middle."

Notice three features. First, the definition is accurate and complete. Second, the application uses the actual names and details from the prompt (Maria, milk, bread). Third, it states a direction — better recall for specific positions. Graders are trained to look for that concrete link. When you name the person and the exact behavior, you make the point almost impossible to deny.

A frequent trap is confusing paired opposites. Proactive interference is when old information disrupts new; retroactive interference is when new disrupts old. Recall requires retrieving information without cues (fill-in-the-blank), while recognition only requires identifying it (multiple choice). Confusing these reverses your answer and loses the point. Before writing, quickly check that you have the direction right — a single reversed word can turn a correct idea into a wrong one.

Timing, Reading, and Avoiding Traps

On exam day you have limited minutes per FRQ, so budget them. Spend the first minute reading the entire prompt and underlining each required term. Do not start writing until you know every concept you must hit; students lose points by forgetting the last term while over-explaining the first.

Answer terms in the exact order the prompt lists them and, if the format allows, label each part so the grader can find your points instantly. Never restate the prompt as your introduction — it wastes time and earns nothing. There is also no penalty for a wrong extra sentence, but a self-contradiction can cost you: if you define a term correctly and then contradict it, graders may take the contradictory version, so keep each answer clean and stop once the point is made.

Finally, write in plain, direct prose. You do not need fancy vocabulary — you need accuracy and a concrete tie to the scenario. If you are unsure of a definition, attempt it anyway with your best application; a partial, on-topic effort can still catch a point, while a blank space guarantees zero.

Start by underlining the four terms and noting the scenario: studying and being quizzed on Spanish vocabulary. Answer each in order with a define-and-apply sentence.

(a) Chunking means organizing information into meaningful units. Application: Jordan groups the 20 vocabulary words into 4 themed sets (food, animals, colors, verbs), reducing the load on working memory so he recalls more words. That links the definition to a specific study behavior — point earned.

(b) Retroactive interference means newly learned material disrupts recall of older material. Application: after Jordan studies French for a different class that night, the new French words interfere with his earlier Spanish words, so he blanks on some Spanish terms during the quiz. Note the correct direction: new disrupting old.

(c) The testing effect means retrieving information through self-testing strengthens memory more than rereading. Application: Jordan quizzes himself with flashcards instead of just rereading the list, so his recall on the actual quiz improves.

(d) Confirmation bias means seeking information that supports existing beliefs. Application: Jordan believes he already knows the color words, so he only reviews words he expects to see and ignores ones he keeps missing, hurting his quiz score.

Each answer names Jordan and a concrete action, states the concept accurately, and gives a direction of effect — the pattern that reliably scores.
