Unit 1 is packed with tempting-but-tricky vocabulary — neurotransmitters, brain regions, hormones, hemispheres — and the FRQ graders want proof you know both what a term means and how it operates in behavior.

This lesson does not re-teach the biology. Instead, it trains the skill of attacking the question: how to read a scenario, structure a paragraph that earns points, and write with the definition-plus-application precision that turns partial credit into full credit. If you can consistently link a concept to the evidence in front of you, you can score on almost any Unit 1 prompt.

How AP FRQs Score Biological Concepts

AP Psychology free-response questions are graded point by point against a rubric. Each point usually requires you to correctly connect a specific term to the specific scenario or research described in the prompt. Simply defining the term in isolation almost never earns the point — you must apply it.

Think of every scoring point as a two-part sentence. First, show you know the concept. Second, tie it directly to a person, behavior, or data set named in the prompt. Graders read for that link explicitly; they do not give you the benefit of the doubt.

A common misconception is that longer answers score higher. They do not. A tight, targeted sentence that names the term and applies it beats a rambling paragraph. Because points are independent, a wrong statement usually cannot cancel a correct one — but never contradict yourself, since graders read for your clearest correct attempt on each term.

The Define-and-Apply Method

Every Unit 1 FRQ point can be attacked with the same move. State the concept accurately in your own words, then immediately anchor it to a concrete detail from the stimulus using a linking phrase like "which is shown when," "this explains why," or "in this case."

Suppose a prompt asks you to explain how the sympathetic nervous system relates to a character named Maya giving a speech. A full-credit response reads: "The sympathetic nervous system triggers arousal for fight-or-flight, which is shown when Maya's palms sweat and her heart pounds as she steps to the microphone." The first clause proves knowledge; the second clause proves application to Maya.

Avoid three frequent errors. First, do not just restate the prompt — "Maya was nervous" is not psychology. Second, do not use the term to define itself, such as "the sympathetic nervous system makes you sympathetic." Third, watch for near-miss confusions that lose points: dopamine versus serotonin, the hypothalamus versus the thalamus, sensory neurons versus motor neurons. If two concepts are easy to swap, add a distinguishing detail so the grader sees you know the difference.

Write one clean sentence per required term, and label your responses to match the prompt's parts so the grader can find each point fast.

Mapping Unit 1 Concepts to Behaviors

FRQs love to hide biology inside everyday stories: someone learning to ride a bike, reacting to a scare, struggling to sleep, or recovering from an injury. Your job is to recognize which biological system explains each behavior. Practicing this translation ahead of time makes the exam feel familiar.

A strong test-taker reads the scenario once for the story, then a second time circling behavioral clues. Each clue points to a Unit 1 mechanism. Because the redesigned exam often embeds a brief research description or source, also be ready to identify variables and evidence, but for biological-bases items the core skill remains matching a body system to an observable behavior and explaining the causal link clearly.

Structuring and Timing Your Response

Treat the FRQ like a checklist, not an essay. Underline each verb in the prompt — explain, describe, identify, apply — and each term you must address. Then write in the same order the prompt lists them so nothing is skipped. Graders should never have to hunt for your answer.

Start each response part with the exact term, so a point is impossible to miss. You do not need an introduction, thesis, or conclusion; those earn zero points and burn time. One well-built sentence per point is the goal.

Manage time by budgeting roughly a minute of planning and then a steady pace of one point per short paragraph. If you blank on one term, move on and return later rather than freezing. Because points are independent, an incomplete but accurate response still scores well.

Finally, proofread for the two silent killers: contradictions and vagueness. If you wrote something wrong, cross it out cleanly, because a grader may read a contradiction as canceling your correct attempt. Replace vague words like "stuff," "part of the brain," or "chemical" with the precise term. Precision plus explicit application is the entire game.

Key terms

Application (in FRQ scoring).
Explicitly connecting a psychological concept to a specific detail, person, or datum in the prompt, which is required to earn most rubric points.
Rubric point.
An independently scored item on an FRQ; each typically requires a correct definition combined with a correct application to the scenario.
Linking phrase.
Wording such as "which is shown when" or "this explains why" that signals the grader you are applying, not just defining, a term.
Stimulus/scenario.

Worked example

After a car accident, Devon developed a fear of driving. When she approaches a car, her heart pounds and she sweats. Her doctor notes low activity of a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, and Devon reports she cannot fall asleep the night before any drive. Explain how the sympathetic nervous system, serotonin, and the amygdala each relate to Devon's experience.
First, break the prompt into its three required terms and answer them in the order given, starting each sentence with the term itself.

Sympathetic nervous system: state the function, then anchor it to Devon. "The sympathetic nervous system produces fight-or-flight arousal, which is shown when Devon's heart pounds and she sweats as she approaches a car." This sentence proves both knowledge and application, so it earns the point.

Serotonin: the prompt gives you a clue — "a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation" with low activity. Write: "Serotonin helps regulate mood, and its low activity, noted by Devon's doctor, helps explain her ongoing distress and low mood surrounding driving." Notice we tie the term to the doctor's note, a specific detail.

Amygdala: connect the fear response to the structure. "The amygdala processes fear and threat, which explains why encountering a car — now associated with the accident — triggers Devon's intense fear reaction."

Each response is one precise sentence: define plus apply. There is no introduction and no filler. Because each point is independent, even if one sentence were weak, the other two would still score. Total: three clean, targeted points.

Practice questions

A student writes: "The cerebellum is a part of the brain that helps with things." On an FRQ asking how the cerebellum relates to a gymnast's routine, why would this most likely earn no point?

FAQ

Do I need to memorize a definition word-for-word for the FRQ?
No. Graders accept accurate paraphrases in your own words. What matters is that the definition is correct and specific, and that you immediately apply it to the prompt. Precision beats memorized phrasing every time.
Will writing more increase my FRQ score?
Not by itself. Points are awarded for correct define-and-apply statements, not length. One targeted sentence per term scores better than a long paragraph. Extra words waste time and can create contradictions that risk a point.
What happens if I include an incorrect statement?
A single wrong statement usually does not cancel a separate correct point because points are scored independently. However, if you contradict yourself about the same term, a grader may not award it. If you realize something is wrong, cross it out cleanly.
How do I know which Unit 1 concept a scenario is testing?
