Why do you eat when you're hungry, study for a test you dread, or keep scrolling when you should sleep? Motivation is the set of forces that energize and direct behavior toward a goal, and psychologists have proposed several competing theories to explain it. In this lesson you'll compare five major motivation theories, apply them to two classic examples the exam loves — hunger and achievement — and learn to tell intrinsic from extrinsic motivation. You'll also master the three types of motivational conflict. AP questions rarely ask you to just define a theory; they give you a scenario and ask which theory or conflict it illustrates. Five Theories of Motivation

Early psychologists explained behavior with instinct theory — the idea that we are born with fixed, unlearned behavior patterns (like a bird building a nest). This explained little in humans because naming an instinct doesn't explain the behavior, so it fell out of favor.

Drive-reduction theory says a physiological need (like thirst) creates an aroused tension state called a drive that pushes us to reduce it and return to homeostasis, a balanced internal state. This explains needs like hunger well but not why we seek stimulation when no need exists.

Arousal theory fills that gap: we act to maintain an optimal level of arousal, sometimes seeking stimulation rather than reducing it. The Yerkes-Dodson law adds that performance peaks at moderate arousal — too little causes boredom, too much causes anxiety — and that the optimal level is lower for difficult tasks.

Incentive theory emphasizes external pulls: positive or negative stimuli (a reward, a grade) motivate us regardless of internal need.

Maslow's Hierarchy and Applying Theories to Hunger

Maslow's hierarchy stacks needs from bottom to top: physiological (food, water), safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization (reaching one's full potential). Some versions add self-transcendence at the top. The claim is that a starving person cares little about esteem — you must satisfy basic needs before higher psychological ones become priorities. Critics note the order isn't rigid; people sometimes sacrifice basic needs for higher ideals.

Hunger is the exam's favorite application. Drive-reduction explains that a low blood-glucose level and hormones like ghrelin (increases hunger) and leptin (decreases hunger) create a drive to eat, restoring homeostasis. The hypothalamus is the key brain region regulating hunger. But incentive theory explains why the smell of fresh cookies makes you eat when you aren't hungry — an external cue pulls you. Culture and learning shape what and how much we eat (a set point or settling point for body weight, plus taste preferences).

So hunger illustrates that no single theory wins; internal push (drive) and external pull (incentive) work together. On the exam, watch the wording: if a scenario emphasizes an internal need or restoring balance, choose drive-reduction; if it emphasizes an appealing external reward or cue, choose incentive.

Achievement Motivation and Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic

Achievement motivation is the desire for significant accomplishment, mastery, and reaching a high standard. People high in achievement motivation prefer moderately challenging tasks where success reflects skill.

A crucial distinction: intrinsic motivation is doing an activity for its own sake — because it's satisfying or interesting (reading a novel for enjoyment). Extrinsic motivation is doing it for an external outcome — a reward or avoiding punishment (studying only for the grade or money).

A classic finding, the overjustification effect, warns that giving external rewards for something a person already enjoys can reduce intrinsic motivation — the person starts attributing their behavior to the reward. AP scenarios test this: a child who loved drawing draws less once paid for it. Recognize that as overjustification, an interaction between extrinsic reward and intrinsic interest. Distinguishing the two motivation types is a common multiple-choice target, so anchor on WHY the person acts.

The Three Types of Motivational Conflict

When motives compete, we face conflict. The exam tests three specific types, and the trick is counting how many goals are involved and whether they attract or repel.

Approach-approach conflict is a choice between two desirable options — both pull you toward them (choosing between two great colleges). It's the least stressful because either outcome is good.

Avoidance-avoidance conflict is a choice between two undesirable options — both repel you (do a chore you hate or get grounded). This is stressful and people often delay deciding.

Approach-avoidance conflict involves a single goal that has both appealing and repelling qualities (accepting a high-paying job that requires moving far from family). As you get closer, the avoidance tendency often grows stronger, producing hesitation right near the goal.

To identify the type on the exam, first ask: is there one goal or two? One goal with mixed feelings is always approach-avoidance. Two goals — then decide whether both are attractive (approach-approach) or both are unattractive (avoidance-avoidance).

Identify the type of motivational conflict each person faces and explain your reasoning.
