Developmental psychology asks how and why people change from conception to death. Before you dive into specific milestones in later lessons, you need the big-picture framework that organizes the whole unit: three enduring debates that every developmental theory takes a stance on, and the research designs psychologists use to actually measure change over time.

This lesson gives you the vocabulary and reasoning the exam rewards. You will learn the nature-nurture, stability-change, and continuity-stages debates, then distinguish cross-sectional from longitudinal studies and understand the confound that trips up cross-sectional research: cohort effects. The Three Core Themes

Developmental psychology is organized around three recurring questions. Understanding each debate helps you classify any theory or study you meet later.

Nature vs. nurture asks how much of who we are comes from genes and biological maturation versus environment, learning, and experience. The modern consensus is not either-or: traits emerge from constant interaction between the two. Stability vs. change asks whether traits established early in life persist (stability) or whether people meaningfully change as they age. Temperament, for example, shows some stability, while attitudes may change. Continuity vs. stages asks whether development is gradual and cumulative (continuity, like a ramp) or whether it happens in distinct, qualitatively different steps (stages, like a staircase).

A common misconception is treating these as three versions of the same debate. They are independent. A theory can favor nature while still describing gradual continuous change, or favor nurture while proposing distinct stages. On the exam, be ready to place a described theorist or finding on the correct dimension rather than assuming they all line up.

Cross-Sectional Design

A cross-sectional study compares different age groups at the same point in time. For example, a researcher might test vocabulary in groups of 20-, 40-, and 60-year-olds during one week and compare their scores. Because everyone is measured at once, cross-sectional studies are fast, inexpensive, and avoid the problem of participants dropping out over years.

The major weakness is that the age groups differ not only in age but also in the era they grew up in. These groups are called cohorts, and the confound they introduce is the cohort effect. If 60-year-olds score lower on a technology task than 20-year-olds, it may not be because aging reduces skill; it may be because the older cohort grew up without that technology. Cross-sectional research cannot separate the effect of aging from the effect of growing up in a different generation.

Because it measures different people at each age, a cross-sectional design also cannot track how an individual changes over time. It gives a snapshot of differences between groups, not a record of development within a person. On the exam, if a question describes measuring several ages simultaneously and asks for a limitation, cohort effects is almost always the intended answer.

Longitudinal Design and Trade-offs

A longitudinal study follows the same group of people across an extended period, testing them repeatedly as they age. Because the same individuals are measured, longitudinal research can reveal genuine developmental change within people and is not confounded by cohort differences the way cross-sectional research is.

The cost is time and money: a study of development from age 5 to 25 literally takes twenty years. Longitudinal studies also suffer attrition, the gradual loss of participants who move, quit, or die, which can bias results if the people who remain differ systematically from those who leave. Repeated testing can also cause practice effects.

The exam loves to test the specific trade-off: cross-sectional trades accuracy about individual change for speed, while longitudinal trades speed and cost for the ability to observe real change and eliminate cohort confounds. Know which design solves which problem.

How the Exam Tests This Topic

Multiple-choice items typically give a short study description and ask you to name the design or identify its key limitation. If different-aged groups are compared in a single study, expect cohort effects to be the correct limitation. If the same people are tracked for years, expect attrition or cost as the weakness.

Other items ask you to match a claim to the right theme. Watch the wording: 'Is intelligence mostly inherited?' is nature vs. nurture. 'Do shy toddlers become shy adults?' is stability vs. change. 'Does moral reasoning develop in discrete steps?' is continuity vs. stages.

A frequent trap is confusing stages with cohort effects, or thinking longitudinal designs have no drawbacks. Another trap is assuming nature-nurture means one must win; the accepted view is interaction. In free-response prompts, you may be asked to apply a design to a scenario and explain one advantage and one disadvantage. Practice writing a single clear sentence for each. Precise, term-specific answers earn points; vague statements like 'it takes a long time' need to be tied to the actual design and its consequence, such as attrition biasing the sample.

She finds the 80-year-olds are slowest. Identify her design, name one advantage, and explain a limitation that undermines her conclusion.
First, identify the design. She measured different age groups at one point in time (2024), so this is a cross-sectional study, not longitudinal, because she did not follow the same people over time.

Next, an advantage: the study is fast and inexpensive. She gets data on three age groups in one testing period instead of waiting 60 years.

Now the limitation. She concluded that aging causes slower reaction time, but the three groups are different cohorts who grew up in different eras. The 80-year-olds may differ from the 20-year-olds in education, nutrition, health care, or experience with the testing equipment, not just in age. This is a cohort effect, and it means the age difference she observed could be caused by generational differences rather than by aging itself.

To draw a stronger causal conclusion about aging, she would need a longitudinal design that tests the same individuals repeatedly as they grow older, though that would require decades and risk attrition. This shows the classic trade-off: her design gained speed but lost the ability to rule out cohort confounds.
