Object permanence is knowing objects exist even when out of sight; a baby who ignores a toy hidden under a blanket hasn't developed it yet. Conservation is understanding that quantity stays the same despite changes in shape or appearance—like knowing water poured into a taller glass is still the same amount. Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory

Physical and Motor Development Milestones

Motor skills emerge in a reliable sequence, though exact timing varies: rolling over, sitting up, crawling, standing, and walking (typically around 12 months). These reflect maturation—biologically driven growth that unfolds regardless of practice, so you cannot train a baby to walk months ahead of schedule.

Early reflexes signal healthy neurological function. The rooting reflex turns an infant toward a touch on the cheek to help find food; the grasping reflex makes a baby clutch objects placed in the palm.

First, note Mia's age: four years old falls into Piaget's preoperational stage (roughly ages 2 to 7).

Next, analyze her error. Mia believes the amount of juice changed simply because the height of the liquid changed. She is focusing on one dimension (height) while ignoring another (width). This failure to recognize that quantity stays constant despite a change in appearance is a lack of conservation.

Conservation is the milestone that emerges in the next stage, concrete operational (around age 7), so it makes sense that a four-year-old has not yet acquired it.
