How Unit 2 FRQs Are Structured and Scored
AP Macroeconomics FRQs are graded on a strict point rubric — you earn points for correct, specific statements, not for eloquence. A typical Unit 2 FRQ has one long question (worth roughly 8-10 points) plus two short ones (about 5 points each). - Do I get partial credit if my calculation setup is right but the arithmetic is wrong?
- Often yes. Many AP rubrics award a point for the correct formula with numbers substituted, separate from the final answer. That is exactly why you should always write the plugged-in expression instead of just the final number — you protect at least one point even if you miscalculate.
- Should I still answer a later part if I think I got the earlier part wrong?
- Yes, always attempt it. Rubrics frequently give consistency or carry-over credit: if part (b) logically follows from your (possibly wrong) part (a) answer, you can still earn the point. Leaving it blank guarantees zero.
- How much should I write for an 'explain' versus an 'identify' prompt?
- For identify, one correct word or number is enough — do not waste time explaining. For explain, you need a clear cause-and-effect sentence. Over-writing on identify parts steals time from parts that actually reward explanation.
- What is the most common Unit 2 FRQ mistake?
- Confusing nominal and real GDP direction, and including transfer payments in government purchases or the underground economy in official GDP. Also, students forget to add a percent sign or dollar units, which can cost a point when the rubric requires correct units.
