A prompt asking you to describe a consequence of urban sprawl will not accept the single word pollution; it wants a specific, complete statement such as impervious surfaces increase runoff that carries oil and sediment into streams. Reading the verb tells you exactly how much to write.

Decoding Task Verbs and Earning Each Point

Every FRQ point has a clear boundary. Graders look for one correct, on-topic idea per point and stop reading once you contradict yourself, so answer directly and avoid hedging.

Identify or state means give a fact or term — one phrase is enough. Describe means provide relevant characteristics; you must say what something is or how it looks or works. Explain demands a reason or mechanism, usually a because or so that chain connecting a cause to an effect. Justify requires linking your choice to evidence or an environmental principle.

A reliable technique is the claim-plus-because sentence. For an explain point, write your claim, then the word because, then the mechanism. Example: monoculture reduces biodiversity because a single crop provides only one type of habitat and food, so specialist species decline.

Common point-losing mistakes include restating the question, listing multiple guesses hoping one is right (graders may take the first answer), forgetting units on calculations, and giving a benefit when asked for a drawback. Answer parts in order and label them (a), (b), (c) so the grader finds each response quickly. If a part has two tasks — describe AND explain — you must do both to earn the point.

Attacking Calculation and Data FRQs

Proposing Solutions and Writing Complete Responses

The second FRQ type asks you to propose a solution to a land-use problem and justify it, which is where Unit 5 sustainability thinking pays off. A strong solution is specific and actionable, and the justification explains how it addresses the exact problem in the scenario.

Weak answer: use better farming. Underline the verbs, jot the formula you will need, and answer every part even if unsure — partial responses score, blanks never do. Keep sentences short and factual. You do not need an introduction or conclusion; go straight to lettered answers. Full sentences, correct terminology, and one clear idea per point are what turn Unit 5 knowledge into a top score.

FAQ

How much should I write for each FRQ part?
Match the task verb. An identify part needs only a word or phrase, while describe and explain parts need one or two complete sentences that include the specific characteristic or mechanism. Writing extra correct material is fine, but padding with vague statements wastes time and can introduce contradictions that cost points.
Do I lose points for a wrong number in a calculation?
