Four Types of Evidence and When to Use Each

AP Lang expects you to command several kinds of evidence and match them to your purpose. The main categories are examples, anecdotes, data, and appeals to authority.

Strong arguments mix types rather than leaning on one. Three statistics in a row can numb a reader; three anecdotes can feel like storytelling without proof. The skill is variety in service of a single claim.

A common misconception is that more evidence is always better. On the exam, a few precisely chosen pieces that you fully explain beat a pile of unexplained references. Every piece of evidence must earn its place by clearly advancing the claim it sits under.

Relevance and Sufficiency: The Two Tests

Before evidence goes in your essay, run it through two filters.

Relevance asks: does this evidence actually connect to the specific claim? A statistic about national reading scores is irrelevant to a claim about your school's library funding unless you build the bridge explicitly. Evidence that is merely on-topic but doesn't support the exact claim weakens an argument because it signals fuzzy thinking.

Sufficiency asks: is there enough, and is it strong enough, to make the claim believable? One dramatic anecdote might grab attention, but a reader may object that it's an isolated case. Sequencing also manages emotional pacing. Opening with a relatable anecdote can lower a reader's defenses before you deliver hard data; closing with an authority quote can lend final credibility. Transitions do the connective work: words like furthermore, even more troubling, and most importantly signal that evidence is accumulating toward a peak.

On the AP Argument essay, graders notice when paragraphs are ordered so each builds on the last rather than floating independently. Ask yourself: if I swapped paragraph two and paragraph four, would the argument feel weaker? If the answer is no, your sequencing isn't yet deliberate.

How the Exam Tests This Skill

Topic 2.2 shows up most directly on the Argument (Q3) free-response essay, where you develop your own position and must supply your own evidence — often from reading, observation, studies, or personal experience. Graders use a rubric that separately scores thesis, evidence and commentary, and sophistication.

The evidence-and-commentary row is where selection and sequencing pay off. To earn the top points, you must provide specific evidence for most of your claims and consistently explain how it supports your line of reasoning. Vague, general evidence caps your score; specific, well-chosen evidence with clear commentary raises it.

They have gathered four pieces of evidence: (1) a personal anecdote about biking to school, (2) city data showing a 30% rise in bike-share ridership last year, (3) a public-health expert's statement that cycling reduces heart disease, and (4) an example of a neighboring city whose expansion cut traffic. How should they select and sequence this evidence?
First, test each piece for relevance and sufficiency. The claim is that the city should expand the program. The ridership data (2) is highly relevant — it proves existing demand. The neighboring-city example (4) is strong because it shows expansion produces results elsewhere. The health expert (3) supports a benefit of cycling but is one step removed from the expansion claim, so it needs a bridge. The personal anecdote (1) is relevant but weakest as proof, since it's a single case.

Next, decide sequencing. A persuasive plan opens with the relatable anecdote (1) to engage the reader and lower resistance. It then pivots to the objective ridership data (2) to establish that demand is real and growing — moving from personal to factual. The neighboring-city example (4) comes next, showing that expansion works in practice and answering the reader's "but will it help?" question. Finally, the health authority (3) closes the paragraph, elevating the argument from local logistics to a broader public good — a mild climactic build.

Throughout, each piece gets commentary. After the data, the writer writes: "This surge shows residents already want more access — a clear signal that supply should meet demand." That sentence supplies the warrant, making relevance visible and turning raw evidence into persuasion.
